New Hardcover . The present study "Hijras : The Labelled Deviants" is the outcome of the help rendered to me by my teachers and friends. I, therefore, consider it my great privilege to express my deep sense of gratitude towards all of them. To begin with, it was Prof. Prakash N. Pimpley, my teacher, who suggested to me to work on Eunuchs (Hijras). Since there was hardly any work available on the subject the study seemed to be an uphill task. However, it was Prof. Pimpley's help and inspiration that the study could make steady progress. For all his help I remain indebted to him. Since the field work constituted the major and most vital aspect of the study, I wish to put on record the help and cooperation of Mr. Vijay Shandilya, my cousin, who helped me by arranging a meeting with a hijra. It is in the context of my first encounter with a hijra that I would like to mention the timely help of Prof. A. Mahajan, currently Chairman of Department of Sociology, Panjab University, Chandigarh. An unhealthy situation arose after the interview with the first case at village Kansal near Chandigarh. The contact-man, through whom the hijra was approached, was assaulted and threatened by the latter of dire consequences. Prof. Mahajan, on my request, immediately responded and with the help of police solved the problem. It was because of that further field work could be carried out. I express my sincere thanks to him. In carrying out the field work, my friend and class-fellow, Mr. S.S. Shergill, currently advocate, Punjab and Haryana High Court, Chandigarh, helped me enormously. He accompanied me to different places and even interviewed one of the most informative and important cases at Jalandhar. His constant help and encouragement was in fact the pivot of the entire field work. I thank him. It was with the help of my teachers and friends that the first report, in the form of a dissertation, could be prepared. Subsequently, two papers entitled "Eunuchs : Past and Present" (The Eastern Anthropologist, Vol. 37, and later abstracted in Sociological Abstracts of ISA) and "Hijra : A Study of An Atypical Role (with Prof. P.N. Pimpley) (Avadh Jr. of Soc. Sciences, Vol. II and later abstracted in Sociological Abstracts of ISA) were published. This renewed my interest in the. subject. It was at this time that I happened to meet Prof. Serena Nanda of John Jay College of Criminal Justice, New York (USA). My brief discussion and subsequent exchange of articles with her helped me tremendously. In fact, her comments on my already published papers helped me to make necessary amendments in my already written draft of this book. For the cooperation and useful comments, I remain grateful to Prof. Nanda. I also thank Prof. Rajeshwar Prasad, Director, Institute of Social Sciences, Agra University, Agra; Mr. Thomas Smith, with whom I could correspond through Prof. Prasad; and Prof. A.M. Shah, Department of Sociology, University of Delhi, Delhi; for sending me their respective papers. In fact, their papers were the only literature to begin with in the context of hijras.
