Dupin, Louis Ellies. De antiqua ecclesiae disciplina dissertationes historicae, excerptae ex conciliis oecumenicis & sanctorum Patrum ac auctorum ecclesiasticorum scriptis auctore Ludovico Ellies du Pin.

Coloniae Agrippinae, sumptibus Huguetanorum, 1691. (24 engraved frontispiece by J. v.d. Aveele, prefaces, table of contents and 2 pp. booksellers catalogue of Georgius Gallet, residing at the Keysers gracht in Amsterdam), 592, (8 index) pp. Contemporary vellum over boards. Small 4to. 21x16 cm. Title-page printed in red and black with engraved vignette; some decorated head- and tailpieces. Very nice and clean copy of the second edition (first 1886) of this controversial Gallicanist work on the teachings of the church fathers which was on the Index of Forbidden books until 1948. Louis Ellies Dupin, a theologian, born 1657, of a noble family in Normandy died 1719. From the beginning of his studies he had accumulated notes on the works and teachings of the Fathers. In 1686 there appeared the first volume of the "Nouvelle bibliotheque des auteurs ecclesiastiques", covering the first three centuries. In it Dupin had treated simultaneously biography, literary criticism, and the history of dogma; in this he was a pioneer leaving far behind him all previous efforts. He was also the first to publish such a collection in a modern language. But the learned historian involved himself in controversy with the advocates of Papal supremacy by publishing this "De Antiqua Ecclesiae disciplina", in which he defended with much zeal the liberty of the Gallican Church. In this work he carefully distinguishes the universal Catholic Church from the Roman Church, and shows that the power of the Papacy was not founded on any warrant of Holy Scripture, nor on the judgments of the Fathers. He allows that the power of keys was given to St. Peter, but not to one man individually, but to the whole Church represented by him. This plain speaking did not commend itself to the occupier of the Papal throne, nor to his tool Louis XIV., who deprived Dupin of his professorship and banished him to Chatelleraut. NBG 15, col. 303-306.; Small defect to vellum at foot of spine, With library ex-libris inside front-cover. ISBN

And thus, we can see where the Church's journey begins in history." -- Pope Benedict XVI The Fathers of the Church exhorted believers in the face of persecution while fighting heresies and misunderstandings. He carefully explains their rich history and the vital role each one played not only in preserving the Church at the time, but also in anchoring the Church of today as well as the future.

Marechal, Bernard. Tome I-II (All published).

Paris, Pierre Emery & Jacques Vincent, 1739. Complete in 2 volumes: (4), lxxxiii, (1), 671, (1 errata) pp.; (4), xl, 700 pp. Contemporary mottled calf with raised bands, gilt decorated spine & brown morocco letterpieces. Marbled endpapers, edges red. 4to. 26x20 cm. Head- & tail-ornaments. With extensive thematical index at end of each volume. Very good set. Very good copy of the scarce first edition of this very accurate concordance on the theological views of the Fathers of the Church by Bernard Marechal (1705-1770), scholarly monk from the Benedictine congregation of Saint Vanne & Saint Hydulphe. Planned was this work in 4 volumes, but the sale of the first 2 volumes was prohibited because of Marechal's attitude towards the papal bull Unigenitus directed against Jansenism. Thereupon the author refused to edit the third and fourth volume for print (cf. Hurter). The work presents selections of each father's theological views under comparable thematic headings: 1 'points dogmatiques' (Ecriture saint, dieu, dieu le verbe, resurrection, etc.); 2. 'points de morale': (incredulite, patience, assurance, purete, douceur des chretiens etc.). This format is chosen to compare views and demonstrate the unity of the various teachings in the early church. When applicable the specific heresies are described against which the Churchfather has opposed. Volume I deals with: Constitutions Apostoliques, Barnabe, pasteur d'Hermas, Clement (Pape), Ignace, Polycarpe, Justin, Athenagore, Theophile, Atien l'Assyrien, Irenee, Clement (d'Alexandrie), Tertullien; Volume II: Tertullien (suite), Minutius Felix, Hippolyte, Origene, Cyprien, Denys d'Alexandrie, Novatien, Gregoire thamaturge, Denis (Pape), Theognoste, Victorin, Pierius, Archelaus. Some wear to spine ends, edges and corners; small library-stamp on first free endpaper; upper right corner of title page in volume 2 torn and sticked to page i; slight browning throughout; Hurter III, p. 46; cf. Graesse IV, p. 388, wrongly lists the 1748 as original edition. Only 1 copy in Dutch central catalog (NCC), 4 US copies in OCLC on-line (nr. 6178322). ISBN
