Cook, Eliza (1818-1889). English poet who gained fame for her poem "The Old Armchair" (1838). AUTOGRAPH QUOTATION SIGNED, "THE OLD ARM-CHAIR". Wimbledon, October 23, 1871.
- An 8-line quotation from her poem "The Old Arm-Chair", penned in sepia-toned ink by Eliza Cook on an 8 inch high by 6 inch wide sheet. Signed "Eliza Cook" and further annotated "With kind compliments". Folded for mailing, with 2 tiny spots along the right edge. Else, near fine. <p>The daughter of a tradesman, Eliza Cook (1818-1889) was encouraged to write poetry by the son of the music master of her Sunday School. Her contributions to other periodicals were subsequently pirated by the Chartist periodical "Northern Star". She herself followed the path of the older Radicals' belief in self-education and Friendly Societies. After the publication of her book Melaia and Other Poems, she published her own periodical "Eliza Cook's Journal". She is best remembered for her poem "The Old Armchair" which brought her fame in England and America.

A tight, clean, sound copy in textured burgandy paper covered boards with gold lettering and a graphic on the spine with very minor overall shelf wear with some very, very light bumping to the top right board corners plus there is the original owner's name in black ink at the top right corner of the front free endpaper. The dust jacket shows very minor overall shelf wear with some light scattered overall rubbing. A novella by a noted American poet and publisher. The story is set in the Spring of 1968 in Paris. An unlikely love affair springs up between an American expatriate painter and an affluent middle-aged banker and armchair anarchist. The painter learns about her lover's radical youth and belief in the power of individual action but as the student protests become more of a battleground and the protest turns violent, the older anarchist's rhetoric begin to sound increasingly hollow.
