Early programmatic publication in which Shklovskij explains his thesis that the plot of a story is just a mean to combine its formal elements and that poetic language brings the daily human - rather unconscious language - to the surface thus building consciousness and creating progress of human mind. - Inside frontcover with sign of a removed paperlabel; extremely rare and fragile - and in beautiful condition. - "Early theoretical work by Shklovskij (1893-1984). On the basis of Laurence Sterne's Novel 'The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman' he points out his thesis, that the "literary time [i.e. the 'ilusionary fabletime'] whose laws are not identical with the prosaic time [i.e. the objectively measurable time] is just an 'agreement'". Shklovsky's Sterne-Essay from 1921 is a keywork of 'Russian Formalism' and an analytic preparation of his theoretical masterwork 'O teorii prozy'(Theory of Prose), 1925. It was published by the 'Opojaz', the 'Society for exploration of poetical language', which existed between 1914 and 1923 and had been co-founded by the author." Russian Formalism was the first theoretical literary school which clearly seperated form and content of a prosework. Under Stalin it has been denounced as 'elitist art' which from today has to be regarded as a compliment as it enabled Ferdinand de Saussure to develop his 'Structural Linguistics' and finally culminated in 'French Structuralism' one of the most refined intellectual schools of the 20th century.

- KEIN REPRINT! - sehr selten, Ebd. berieben, Buchecken bestoßen, wenige S. etwas fleckig, name auf Vorsatz, insgesamt sehr gut erhalten. -- Laurence Sterne (1713 - 1768) war ein englischer Schriftsteller. Sterne studierte Theologie an der Universität Cambridge und hatte im Laufe der Jahre verschiedene Pfarrstellen inne. Mit den ersten beiden Bänden des Romans "Leben und Ansichten von Tristram Shandy, Gentleman, der 1759 erschien, löste er einen Skandal aus. Nachdem er vier weitere Bände verfasst hatte, siedelte er für zweieinhalb jahre nach Frankreich über. Nachdem 1767 der neunte (und letzte) Band erschienen war, wandte sich Sterne einem weiteren Projekt zu "Der empfindsamen Reise". Er starb nur drei Monate nach Erscheinen an Tuberkulose. Tristram Shandy ist ein Roman, der aus einer Reihe von Skizzen besteht und teils unter der Maske des Yorick, eines Geistlichen und Humoristen, teils unter derjenigen des phantstischen Tristram vorgetragen wird. - -- Wir akzeptieren VISA und MASTERCARD.
