SIGNED HC 1st ed -
First printing. SIGNED on the front endpaper. Stefansson's account of his third expedition to the Arctic region - trained as an anthropologist, and praised by Peary as one of the last of the 'old-school' explorers (that is, he used dog sleds and other the traditions of the Eskimos to travel) and live in this he focuses on going to regions which the Eskimo considered barren - "firm in the belief that I could go into regions where Eskimos had never been and into which Eskimos were unwilling to go because they believed them devoid of resources, and that I could in these regions travel indefinitely" and discovered that far from containing life, it was the 'friendly Arctic.' Illustrated with many photographs and maps, some folding. Foreword by Gilbert Grosvenor of the National Geographic Society, Introduction by Sir Robert Laird Borden, Prime Minister of Canada. Index. xxv, 784 pp. A large, thick octavo. Good overall in blue cloth with gilt lettering, sturdy binding despite the thickness of the book, a spot to the back cover, some shelfwear and bumping to the corners and missing the two separate folding maps from the pocket at the rear of the book.

to learn whatever he could about the Eskimos. During 5-6 years of continuous residence he learned that the Eskimos resemble an uninstructed peasantry with a large measure of native intelligence lying fallow, lacking opportunities of instruction and development....the Eskimos are honest and intelligent but have a higher percentage of unfounded beliefs than any white people with whom I have associated. Navy blue binding, gilt lettering. Edge wear. Two maps in back pocket: Discoveries in the Arctic Sea (Positions deduced and mapped) in black & white & Discoveries in the Arctic Sea 1913-18 (tears) in color..
