THIJSSE, JAC.P. Nederlandsche Vogels. Zwolle, Erven J.J. Tijl, (ca. 1915).
Album with 12 beautiful plates of birds, for the school teacher to illustrate his lessons on natural history. The plates were probably handed around, as they seem just too small for hanging in the front of the classroom. Size of the plates is ca. 37 x 31 cm., including ample margins. The titles read: "Aan Zee", with birds from the seaside, "Vliegenjagers", with singing birds mainly eating flies, "In 't Naardermeer", with birds living on the lake, "In 't Rietland", with singing birds living near brooks, "De Eenden", with all kinds of ducks, "Nawinter", with birds passing on their way south, "In de weide", with birds living in meadows, "De Dikbekken", with birds with rather thick beaks, "Bij huis", with birds living near the house, "Miereneters", with birds mainly eating ants, and "Oktober", with singing birds eating berries. All birds are finely drawn and colour-printed. The artist, Sjoerd Kuperus, born in 1893 on the Dutch isle of Texel, was a pupil of Albert Hahn and Jan Sluyters.
Good copy.- (Boards portfolio sl. soiled; library stamp on lower margins of plates).
Cf. Bibelebontse Berg p. 534 (portrait of Jac P. Thijsse by Kuperus, from 1925); Vollmer 3, p. 140.
Oblong folio. Original half cloth portfolio, with front cover design in red and black, including a stork and a pelican.
