Sadleir, M. XIX Century Fiction. A Bibliographical Record based on his own Collection. [ 2 vols, complete set ] Cooper Square Publishers, New York, 1969 reprint of 1951 first edition.
The best reprint of this classic work, in large format and with good-quality illustrations. Volume I provides a detailed bibliographical catalogue of some 3,392 items, many entries extensively annotated, together with Sadleir's entertaining introduction "Passages from the Autobiography of a Bibliomaniac" and an interesting analysis of "Comparative scarcities" for many of the more important authors. Volume II is a bibliographical catalogue of his "Yellow-back collection" together with a section on "Novelist's Libraries, Standard Novels, the Parlour Library, and other cloth (or cloth and board) bound fiction (or part-fiction) series." Sadleir's work is primarily based on his own fiction collection, but in many cases he expanded the scope to provide complete bibliographies for previously-unbibliographed authors, even including non-fiction works. The authors featured in the "comparative scarcities" section are: W H Ainsworth, R D Blackmore, the Brontes, Bulwer Lytton, Wilkie Collins, Charles Dickens, Benjamin Disraeli, George Eliot, Elizabeth Gaskell, George Gissing, Thomas Hardy, Henry James, Richard Jefferies, Charles Kingsley, Henry Kingsley, Joseph Le Fanu, Charles Lever, Frederick Marryat, George Meredith, Ouida, Charles Reade, Somerville & Ross, William Thackeray, Anthony Trollope, Mrs Frances Trollope, Mrs Henry Wood. According to Breslauer and Folter: "The fundamental bibliography of Regency and Victorian fiction, based upon his own collection, by one of the most influential English bibliographers of the present century. Sadileir was also the author of the best-known post-Victorian Victorian novel, Fanny by Gaslight. His Trollope collection, on which he had based his exemplary bibliography (1929) and which he had sold to Princeton University, is not included (apart from a few corrections and additions). Vol. I is an alphabetical author bibliography; vol. II lists the "Yellow Back Collection" and fiction series. The small number of works which Sadleir failed to secure for himself are described from copies in statutory libraries and marked with an asterisk. Sadleir sold his collection to the library of the University of California at Los Angeles."

2 vols, cloth, 4to, xxxiii, 398 + 195 pp. Very Good.
