Frank, Robert: Pangnirtung. ; 1. Ed.
Steidl, Göttingen. 2011. First edition, first printing. New, mint, unread; still originally shrink-wrapped in publisher's plastic foil. By the maker of 3 of the most important photobooks ever published: Les americains/The americans (Martin Parr , The Photobook , page 247), Flower Is (Martin Parr , The Photobook, page 264) and The Lines of my hand (Martin Parr, The Photobook, page 261). Hardcover without jacket (as issued). 230 x 305 mm. 40 pages, 27 black & white plates. "In August 1992 Robert Frank's good friend Reginald Rankin invited Frank on a trip to Pangnirtung, a village of around 1,300 Inuit inhabitants in the Arctic Circle. This book is Frank's documentation of the five-day sojourn. Curiously Frank depicts Pangnirtung void of its people: the still harbour, public housing, a convenience store, a telephone post. Sincere without being sentimental, the photos are shaped by a short text from Frank himself, "Prefabricated homes along the main road in Pangnirtung. At times a decorated window - reflections inside or outside. Stones - maybe the balance of a big sky above " (from the publisher) Robert Frank was born in Zurich, Switzerland in 1924 and went to the United States in 1947. He is best known for his seminal book The Americans, first published in 1959, which gave rise to a distinct new art form in the photo-book, and his experimental film Pull My Daisy, made in 1959. His other important projects include the book Black White and Things (1954) the book Lines of My Hand (1972) and the film Cocksucker Blues (1972). Frank's work has been the subject of major exhibitions around the world and is included in many significant public and private collections. He divides his time between New York City and Nova Scotia, Canada.***************Steidl, Göttingen. 2011. Erstausgabe. Originalausgabe. Neu, ungelesen, verlagsfrisch; noch orginal-verpackt in der Plastikfolie des Verlages. Hardcover ohne Schutzumschlag. 230 x 305 mm. 40 Seiten, 27 schwarz-weiß Fotos. Vom Macher drei der wichtigsten Fotobücher aller Zeiten: Les americains, The americans (Martin Parr , The Photobook , Seite 247), Flower Is (Martin Parr, The Photobook , Seite 264), The Lines of my hand (Martin Parr, The Photobook, Seite 261).
Frank, Robert and Gerhard Steidl: Zero Mostel reads a book. ; 1. Ed.
Steidl, Göttingen. 2008. First edition, first printing. New, mint, unread; still originally shrink-wrapped in publisher's plastic foil. Hardcover without jacket (as issued). 137 x 202 mm. 40 pages, 36 tritone plates. Book design by Robert Frank and Gerhard Steidl. By the maker of 3 of the most important photobooks ever published: Les americains/The americans (Martin Parr , The Photobook , page 247), Flower Is (Martin Parr , The Photobook, page 264) and The Lines of my hand (Martin Parr, The Photobook, page 261). "When Robert Frank had completed his first two films, he accepted a commission for a photo-book from the New York Times, which became Zero Mostel Reads a Book. In it Frank takes the comic actor Zero Mostel (1915-1977) for hissubject, and depicts him in cartoonish dimensions-bemused, baffled and apoplectic, as he makes his way through an unidentified hardback volume, seated at a table or on a sofa in a large lounge area. Originally published "for the fun of it" in 1963 and dedicated to the American bookseller, the book was intended as a present for customers yet it never reached the book market. It has been a collector's item since. Zero Mostel Reads a Book references a series of theatrical and playful vignettes in which Mostel's most famous roles-Tevye in Fiddler on the Roof, Pseudolus in A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, and Max Bialystock in The Producers-are clearly signaled. It is a delightful moment of slapstick in Frank's oeuvre, and directly reflects his emphasis on the moving image at the time." Frank, Robert and Henry Frank: Henry Frank, Father Photographer. ; 1. Ed.
Steidl, Göttingen. 2009. First edition, first printing. New, mint, unread; still originally shrink-wrapped in publisher's plastic foil. Hardcover without jacket (as issued). 140 x 165 mm. 88 pages. Tritone plates throughout. By the maker of 3 of the most important photobooks ever published: Les americains/The americans (Martin Parr , The Photobook , page 247), Flower Is (Martin Parr , The Photobook, page 264) and The Lines of my hand (Martin Parr, The Photobook, page 261). "Robert Frank's father, Henry (1890-1976), was both the proprietor of a bicycle shop in Zurich, and a keen amateur photographer. Father Photographer makes public for the first time a selection of Henry Frank's photographs including landscapes, family portraits, still-lifes and cityscapes. A couple of years ago, Gerhard Steidl found at a Robert Frank's sudio wooden boxes containing the complete archive of his father's stereophotographs. In 2008 that box and the fragile photographic glass plates within it were handescorted to Steidl in Göttingen, where they were scanned in tritone in preparation for this book. Designed by Robert Frank, Father Photographer reveals Henry Frank to be both a talented photographer and a keen traveller. His pictures include snow-capped Alps and lakes in Switzerland, views of Venice, Pisa and Florence, and depictions of his family and friends including the young Robert. Henry Frank also reveals a passion for modern means of transport in images of aeroplanes, ships, hot-air balloons, and a car fair at the Grand Palais in Paris. Father Photographer is a revelation of the unknown photographer Henry Frank, a historical photographic document of the early twentieth century, as well as a new chapter in Robert Frank's ongoing bookmaking."
