The ancient Irish province of Munster covers Cork, Kerry, Killarney, Clare, Limerick, Waterford and Tipperary; names which drew the modern traveller to Ireland in ever-increasing numbers. Starting from a central point in each county, Richard Hayward leads the reader on from place to place, always giving clear descriptions of how to get there whether by main road, lane or footpath. In a light, informative way, the author deals with the history, scenery, geology and folklore of each area. His warm and friendly style, and his unique knowledge of Ireland, are bred of his deep affection, for a country which he has studied continuously and lovingly ever since he was a boy. RICHARD HAYWARD is a well-known and prolific writer on Ireland, a singer of Irish ballads, many of which be has recorded, and a much-esteemed lecturer on Irish dialects, folk-song and folklore. He is, for the third time, Chairman of the Irish P.E.N., a Past President of the Belfast Naturalists' Field Club, President of the Ulster Folksong Society and a Committee member of many kindred Societies with interests in geology, archaeology, music, folklore and botany. He is a Doctor of Literature of Lafayette University, Pennsylvania. There are 12o half-tone illustrations in the text from pencil drawings by RAYMOND PIPER, the well-known portrait painter, who travelled the length and breadth of Ireland with Richard Hayward and was inspired by the Author's knowledge and enthusiasm to produce these superbly evocative illustrations. This volume carries a gift inscription to the title page which reads 'A welcome back to Bantry Bay 8th January 1979' signed by 'William P. Ryan' A label is affixed to the verso of the front endpaper which states that the book was 'Presented by W.P.Ryan of Dublin to commemorate RNAS Culdrose involvement in the BANTRY BAY tanker disaster 8th January 1979' which accounts for the neat 'Education Centre - Reference RNAS Culdrose, Helston, Cornwall' stamp to the front endpaper. Royal Naval Air Station Culdrose being the base for a squadron of Air Sea Rescue Helicopters often tasked far out into the Atlantic on rescue missions. A beautiful book with interesting history.
