[BEATLES; JOHN LENNON] - JANOV, ARTHUR. The Primal Scream. Primal Therapy: The Cure for Neurosis.
* Greatly important documentation of the perhaps most crucial turning point in John Lennon's intellectual, spiritual and musical development: His meeting with Dr. Janov's primal scream therapy, following what he (and Yoko) considered as a "new beginning" during their stay at the socalled New Experimental College in Denmark in January 1970. John Lennon was given a copy of "The Primal Scream" in early 1970, and both he and Yoko got so excited by the book that they instantly invited Janov to England to try his therapy on both of them. After the first sessions, John and Yoko travelled to Los Angeles where they attended therapy sessions for about four months. The primal therapy had an immense impact on John Lennon who found a way to cope with his traumatic childhood memories and the early loss of his mother Julia. His 1970 masterpiece, the "John Lennon/Plastic Ono band" album, directly reflects both the therapy, mainly in the unforgettable song "Mother", and his new insights, in songs as "I Found Out", "God" and "My Mummy's Dead". The spirit of this album was carried on into John Lennon's next album, "Imagine" from 1971. The theoretical complex behind Arthur Janov's therapy can be discussed, but unquestionably it played a crucial role in the creative and mental processes behind two of the greatest masterpieces of rock'n'roll.
** John Lennon's interest in finding an intellectual way of coping with his traumatic history was boosted during his stay at the New Experimental College (in Danish: "Verdensuniversitetet") in Northern Jutland, Denmark, from December 29, 1969 till January 25, 1970. His meeting with the open-ended education of the Danish folk high school environment and talks with the charismatic head of the place, Aage Rosendal Nielsen, and his wife Sara, a psychologist, seems to have opened his mind to new perspectives on his own situation - the inscription in this copy of Janov's book is also a statement in a continuing dialogue.
*** Originally, the purpose of the Lennon-couple's stay in Denmark was finding a way to have Yoko Ono getting custody of her daughter Kyoko, who lived with her father, American musician and filmmaker Anthony Cox. He and his new wife Melinda were staying at the New Experimental College; thus John Lennon and Yoko Ono went there to seek a solution to the conflict over Kyoko. Despite good will from both sides, the efforts were fruitless, and Kyoko stayed with her father. However, as mentioned above, the stay in Northern Jutland had other lasting results for John Lennon. As a physical sign of "a new beginning", he and Yoko had their long hair and his beard cut on January 20, 1970. During the discussions in Denmark, Melinda again and again used a certain phrase, "instant karma". Two days after returning to England, Lennon perpetuated this phrase into a song.

Inscribed by John Lennon on dedication leaf: "To Aage and Sarah this is all we do now till the end. it seems to be the only way (last 2 words underlined) love John & Yoko". John Lennon has also ringed the author's printed dedication and underlined the passage "to end the struggle".
Enclosed: Recent copy of photograph (21x13,5 cm) taken in Denmark on Jan. 5. 1970, showing John, Yoko, Yoko's daughter Kyoko and Kyoko's father Anthony Cox with his wife Melinda Kendall. Behind them stands Aage Rosendal Nielsen, head of the New Experimental College. In the background is seen a TV-crew.
Enclosed: Original letter from Arthur Janov to Sara, wife of Aage Rosendal Nielsen, 21 lines, signed in hand (no date (summer 1970)). Janov describes plans of arrangements with New Experimental College: "Our problem is staff. All we could do temporarily is offer someone to lecture for a very short time and show film, perhaps, but any kind of semester arrangement is out of the question for now. Actually, John and Yoko could lecture on all this as well if not better than I can".
