Daiches, David: Charles Edward Stuart. The life and times of Bonnie Prince Charlie. With 31 Illuatrations. Mit einem Literaturverzeichnis und einem Register. With bibliography and index. London, History Book Club, 1973.
Guter Zustand. Buchecken minimal gestaucht. Schutzumschlag etwas fleckig. Aus der Bibliothek der Gräfin Ledebur. Aus dem Klappentext: Why did Charles Edward Stuart become one of the great romantic figures of history, a familiar name even to those who know nothing of his curious career? His ambitious project was frustrated, his accomplishment nil. The whole adventure lasted fourteen months from 1745 to 1746, and was followed by forty years of restless exile and degeneration, during which Charles wandered from one Continental place of exile to another. He is the prime example of the hero of a lost cause, a personality virtually created by Scottish nostalgia for a kingdom that had vanished, for a past that had been romanticized, for a leader to re-establish a nationalist sense of identity, unity and power. Professor Daiches has brushed away the dust of the waxwork figure that is usually represented as Bonnie Prince Charlie, and writes of the real person within the context of his times and character. He also makes clear how the Charles Edward of history became the Bonnie Prince Charlie of legend and folk memory. Since this biography is based almost entirely on contemporary sources, Charles emerges directly from eighteenth-century Europe, with all its political and dynastic intrigue. This approach provides entirely new insights into familiar and unfamiliar events, and explains the irresistible and unwavering appeal that Charles has exerted so widely and for such a long time. David Daiches, Professor of English at the University of Sussex, has produced a distinguished biography which will also serve as the standard work on the period, and its significance in Scottish history, for many years to come. - Prince Charles Edward Louis John Casimir Sylvester Maria Stuart (31 December 1720 - 31 January 1788) commonly known as Bonnie Prince Charlie or The Young Pretender was the second Jacobite pretender to the thrones of England, Scotland, and Ireland. This claim was as the eldest son of James Francis Edward Stuart, and grandson of James II and VII. Charles is perhaps best known as the instigator of the unsuccessful Jacobite uprising of 1745, in which he led an insurrection which ended in defeat at the Battle of Culloden that effectively ended the Jacobite cause. Charles's flight from Scotland after the uprising has rendered him a romantic figure of heroic failure in later representations.[2][3] ... Aus: wikipedia-Charles_Edward_Stuart

; weicher Einband / soft cover
Der satirische Einblattdruck "[...] Paye qui Tombe , (Whoever falls off, pays) depicts a fairground tent in which competitors attempt in turn to dance along a slack rope. There is a discreet number attached to every figure, with a trilingual key. A thesis could be written on this print alone. The Young Pretender (Charles Edward) has just lost his balance, while the Emperor awaits his turn. France and Holland stand by as musicians, while the Old Pretender is peeping anxiously over the hangings of the fairground tent - thus subtly implying that he has not been prepared (or able) to pay the price of admission." (Satirical Prints, Pamphlets and Polemics. Aberdeen, University o. Insel. Festland. (cf. Online Archive of California, OAC).

Alles Biographien, teils in deutscher, teils in englischer Sprache. Siehe Bild. The books were part of the estate of a fanatic book-collector. He bought most of them used at antiquarian bookshops. Conditions vary from ok to fine, see picture.
