From the introduction: "As the title indicates, this book covers the years 1837-1901 and deals with an older and less familiar London whose boundaries were rather different from those we know now, but may loosely be said to cover the Cities of London and Westminster. The list is primarily concerned with bookbinding businesses rather than individual binders. The area and the types of establishment covered by the list are dealt with in more detail in the section about the Post Office Directory. Besides the data drawn from the directories notes have been added to individual entries where further information was known: these include transfers of addresses with change of ownership, dates of death of proprietors, full names of partners -when known - and separate listings by their surname, and other miscellaneous information. An index of street names has been added to make the book easier to use."
