PORTER, W. (William) Townsend. ON THE RESULTS OF LIGATION OF THE CORONARY ARTERIES. London: Journal of Physiology, 1893.

Garrison-Morton786. A Near Fine Offprint in the Original printed wrappers which have mild edge wear, small inscription and stamp of Harvard Medical School. Partially uncut. Offprint from The Journal of Physiology Volume 15, No. 3, pp. 121-138 + 1 Plate. 8vo. An important paper both for its overall physiologic sophistication and for the science of cardiology. William Townsend Porter (1862-1949) was one of the founders of modern physiologic research. His career as a physician began in St. Louis (1887) where he established the first laboratory of physiology beyond the Eastern seaboard. The current work demonstrated that death did not always result when coronary arteries were ligated. Porter deduced from this that the coronary arteries were not end arteries and ascribed the consistently fatal results reported by Conheim (1881) to operative trauma. The sophistication of Porter's research work brought him to the attention of Henry Bowditch, Chairman of the Department of Physiology at Harvard Medical School. In 1893, at the invitation of Professor Bowditch, Porter moved to Harvard where he was instrumental in developing their physiology teaching curriculum. He also founded the Harvard Apparatus Company which manufactured laboratory equipment for Harvard and eventually, as a commercial company, supplied equipment to other institutions. He never received a salary from the company and in 1921 the Porter Research Fellowship was established with funds from the apparatus company. The Fellowship was awarded annually by the American Physiological Society. Porter also founded the "American Journal of Physiology" in 1897 and served as its principal financial backer and editor until 1914.
