Two volumes of the works of Homer translated by Alexander Pope with and introduction to the Iliad by Pope and the introduction to the Odyssey by Carl Van Doren. Limited edition number 1312/ 1500 copies. Designed by J.van Krimpen and signed by him in both volumes. Both have t.e.g and deckled edges. Red volume, The Iliad of Homer, 706 pp + Table of Contents. slighly darkened from dust soiling along spine. The Odyssey of Homer, blue cloth 4to, 548 pp + table. Both volumes in yellow slipcases. Huit (sur neuf) volumes in-8 plein veau blond de l'epoque, dos lisses, cloisonnes et orne d'urnes, pieces de titre rouges et de tomaison vertes, coupes guillochees, deux portraits-frontispices gravees par J. MILLER, 5 planches gravees, dont 3 depliantes. Index. Ex-libris ancien manuscrit sur les gardes, Sophia CHOLLET. (Il manque le dernier volume contenant les 6 derniers chants de l'Odyssee ; six coiffes abimees, huit mors fendus, coins uses, deux pieces de tomaison sont manquantes et une est abimee, un plat legerement tache ; rares rousseurs, mouillures claires au dernier titre.) GRAESSE III, 335. Alexandre POPE (1688-1744) traduit la poesie d'Homere de 1715 a 1725. "La version de Pope, si defectueuse comme representation de l'original, mais si habilement versifiee, n'a pas ete surpassee, meme par celle de Cowper." (Hoefer XL, 804). Notre exemplaire se compose ainsi : les cinq premiers volumes contiennent le texte de l'Iliade, les trois suivants les 18 premiers chants de l'Odyssee. ETAT MOYEN. 300
