Original vertical fine-ribbed green cloth, smooth backstrip gilt lettered direct, slightly creased at head and foot, 2 small indents on upper side, endpapers renewed, modern bookplate of the collector and bibliographer Mark Samuels Lasner, Senior Research Fellow at the University of Delaware Library. Internal condition very good. - William Michael Rossetti's second book, preceded only by "The Comedy of Dante Allighieri Part I - The Hell" published in 1865. Swinburne's "Poems and Ballads" was published by Edward Moxon in 1866. It was not well received by the press or the public, and so was withdrawn by Moxon. Hotten bought the sheets and re-issued the book, and then proceeded to publish two defences of the work, Swinburne's own, entitled "Notes on Poems and Review" and this one by Rossetti.
