Stowe, Harriet Beecher: Men of Our Times; or Leading Patriots of the Day. Being Narratives of the Lives and Deeds of Statesmen, Generals, and Orators. First Edition. Illustrated with 19 steel portraits. Hartford, CT Hartford Publishing Co. 1868

Harriet Beecher Stowe, famed author of "Uncle Tom's Cabin" dedicated this book "To the Young Men of America." These are narratives of the lives and deeds of statesmen, generals, and orators: Pres. Abraham Lincoln, Gen. U.S. Grant, William L. Garrison, Charles Sumner, Salmon P. Chase, Henry Wilson, Horace Greeley, Commodore D.G. Farragut, Gov. John A. Andrew, Schuyler Colfax, E. M. Stanton, Frederick Douglass, Gov. Wm. A. Buckingham, Gen. W.T. Sherman, Gen. P.H. Sheridan, Gen. Oliver O. Howard, Wendell Phillips and Rev. Henry Ward Beecher. Illustrated with 19 steel portraits, most of them engraved by A.H. Ritchie and H.W. Smith. The first engraving is a remarkable and dramatic frontispiece portrait of the author. This book was sold by subscription. Published three years after the end of the Civil War, and including the Great Emancipator, several powerful champions of the abolition of slavery, and one, Frederick Douglass, who himself rose from slavery. Stowe offers this list of men as a "specimen of the graduates from the American school of Christian Democracy." When Mrs. Stowe was introduced to President Lincoln in 1862, he is said to have greeted her with the words: "So you are the little woman who wrote the book that started this great war!" Stowe's book contains many references to her Christian upbringing; this is particularly noteworthy in the 25 pages she devotes to Lincoln's assassination and her "Final Estimate" of him. Green cloth on board with author's signature in gilt across front, slight rubbing and very slight fraying at heel and toe of spine. Engravings all covered with tissue guard, all text quite clean. A very good copy.
