Strout, Elizabeth. Olive Kitteridge: Fiction. Random House Trade Paperback, September 30, 2. ; weicher Einband / soft cover ISBN: 0-8129-7183-3
Thirteen linked tales from Strout (Abide with Me, etc.) present a heart- wre nching, penetrating portrait of ordinary coastal Mainers living lives of qu iet grief intermingled with flashes of human connection. The opening Pharma cy focuses on terse, dry junior high-school teacher Olive Kitteridge and he r gregarious pharmacist husband, Henry, both of whom have survived the loss of a psychologically damaged parent, and both of whom suffer painful attra ctions to co-workers. Their son, Christopher, takes center stage in A Littl e Burst, which describes his wedding in humorous, somewhat disturbing detai l, and in Security, where Olive, in her 70s, visits Christopher and his fam ily in New York. Strout's fiction showcases her ability to reveal through f amiliar details--the mother-of- the-groom's wedding dress, a grandmother's d isapproving observations of how her grandchildren are raised--the seeds of tragedy. Themes of suicide, depression, bad communication, aging and love, run through these stories, none more vivid or touching than Incoming Tide, where Olive chats with former student Kevin Coulson as they watch waitress Patty Howe by the seashore, all three struggling with their own misgivings about life. Like this story, the collection is easy to read and impossible to forget. Its literary craft and emotional power will surprise readers unf amiliar with Strout..

Strout, Elizabeth. AMY AND ISABELLE: A NOVEL Scarce Signed Copy of The First Hardcover Edition. New York City, NY: Random House, 1998.
Hardcover. First Edition. First Printing. 304 pages. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. The author's debut novel. Now considered a contemporary classic. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. "Offers up a moving yet resolutely unsentimental portrait of people coming to terms with their lives, finding unsuspected nobility in themselves and unexpected kindness in others. A gem of a novel" (Alix Wilber). Elizabeth Strout began publishing late in life. She was a lawyer for many "utterly miserable" years before she finally decided, "No more law! I would rather fail miserably in life as a writer than as a lawyer" (Elizabeth Strout). She is a "mature" writer rather than a "flash-in-the-pan" prodigy (even though she has been writing all her life, the years as a lawyer included). She is also not a prolific writer at all; it took her eight years to write and publish "Abide With Me", her luminous second novel. Strout's third novel, "Olive Kitteridge", catapulted her into worldwide fame overnight. Until recently one of the best-kept secrets of contemporary American literature, her debut novel is a "must-have" title for Elizabeth Strout collectors. <b><i> This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed in black pen on the title page by Elizabeth Strout. It is signed directly on the page, not on a tipped-in page or a bookplate. This title has been out-of-print as a hardcover for a very long time and is now highly collectible. This is one of very few signed copies of the First Hardcover Edition still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a beauty. Signed copies of the First Hardcover Edition will always be difficult to find because according to the author herself, the first print runs of her first three novels were "tiny" (her word) and the books immediately went into paperback thereafter. Many copies available online have serious flaws ("minimal shelfwear"). A very scarce signed copy thus. </b></i> Winner of the Pulitzer Prize in 2009 for "Olive Kitteridge". One of the finest living American writers. A fine collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER ELIZABETH STROUT TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 0375501347. Signed by Author.
