En outre, la douceur du climat, la belle lumiere du Mekong surent exercer sur l'infatigable voyageur une attirance irresistible. Pavie commence sa carriere comme commis des telegraphes. Son premier poste au Cambodge lui permet de developper a la fois ses qualites d'explorateur et de montrer son aptitude a s'impregner de la civilisation locale. Ces qualites le font remarquer. Il apprend le cambodgien, se voit confier de petites missions d'exploration qu'il accomplit a merveille en dressant des itineraires precis. Nomme vice-consul a Luang Prabang en novembre 1885, Pavie ajoute un vrai talent de diplomate a ses qualites. A partir de 1888, il devient le chef d'une veritable mission a vocation scientifique, geographique et politique. On va parler des lors de " mission Pavie ". Pavie et ses compagnons vont faire un travail considerable et relever plus de 35 000 km d'itineraires pour une superficie de 675 000km2. Face aux Siamois, Pavie revele son sens de la negociation faite de patience et d'obstination. Mais le reve de Pavie, ce qui sous-tend son action pendant toutes ses annees d'explorateur et de diplomate, est de faire du Laos une province de l'Indochine. Prima edizione di questo interessante racconto sulla prima missione cattolica in Texas e Messico intrapresa da Emmanuel Domenech (1825-1903). Domenech nel 1845 decise di andare in Texas. Parti nel 1846 da Le Havre per raggiungere il continente americano. Per i primi due anni visse a St. Louis dove concluse i suoi studi di teologia, successivamente nel 1848 lascio il Texas e venne ordinato sacerdote a Sant'Antonio; si tratta del primo sacerdote ordinato in Texas. <BR>Dopo aver affrontato numerosi viaggi tra i territori del Texas e del Messico, riuscendo a sfuggire ai numerosissimi pericoli del tempo (si era infatti da poco conclusa la guerra tra i due Stati 1846-1848), ritorno in Francia nel 1852 e inizio a scrivere la sua opera, stampata a Parigi nel 1857. L'opera racconta i viaggi dei primi missionari cattolici nei territori americani; interessante anche per le descrizione dei luoghi, degli usi e costumi della popolazione indigena del tempo.<BR>Nel 1858 l'opera venne tradotta in inglese e nel 1872 venne pubblicata la seconda edizione. Buon esemplare con barbe, sul piatto posteriore manca una parte della brossura originale. MORELET, Arthur. Account of a scientific expedition through Central America Voyage dans l'Amerique centrale, l'ile de Cuba et le Yucatan. Paris, Gide & J. Baudry, 1857.
First edition of an important account of a voyage to Central America and Cuba by Arthur Morelet (1809-1892). Morelet, a French natural scientist, was the first to explore the vast territory of Guatemala, which was inhabited by the Itzas and the Locadons. He travelled through the region from November 1846 to February 1848 and described his observations and experiences extensively. In his report to the Paris Academie des Sciences of February 1850, Morelet indicated that he had deposited at the Museum 90 cryptogamic plantes, 150 species of molluscs which were described never before, 32 species of unknown fish, 104 reptiles, saurians, snakes, 70 birds and 57 mammals, but his observations are also of interest from a geographical, ethnological and archeological point of view.

Re-issue of the very interesting series describing Lafond's travels and shipwrecks in 8 vols, originally published in 1843-44. Gabriel Lafond de Lurcy, French explorer, born in Lurcy Levy, Allier, 25 March, 1802; died in Paris, 11 April, 1876. He studied in Nantes and Moulins, and inspired by the reading of Cook and Bougainville he entered the merchant navy in 1818. Four years later had already the command of a ship. For several years he traded with both Americas, but, after inheriting a large estate, he travelled more for pleasure than for mercantile purposes. During the years 1822-36 he visited Chili, Brazil, and Central America, where he was eyewitness of the struggle for independence of the various states of the South American continent. In 1849 he became consul for Costa Rica in Paris, and in the following year minister of the same republic, which post he held for twenty years. He was elected a member of the Geographical society of Paris in 1851, and corresponding member of the American geographical society in 1857.
