Matham after Adriaan van de Venne, all relating to the Dutch rebellion against Spain, and all including the Dutch Lion and the Hat of Freedom on a pole, with musical scores for singing voice, lute and cither to all songs. Nineteenth-century light brown morocco, with gold-tooled spine, double blind tooled fillets on sides with gilt ornaments at the corners, marbled edges.

The song book contains the first printing with musical scores of the Dutch national anthem, 'Wilhelmus van Nassaue'. As most songs were composed in the heat of the fight against Spain, the song book is also a history in songs of the sieges on land and the battles at sea of the arising Dutch Republic, employing all its energy to consolidate and expand a Free Dutch State. Between the songs, texts in prose explain the poems and list the most important exploits of the Dutch on land and sea. So, songs and texts are also about the voyages of exploration towards the East and West-Indies, the foundation of the Dutch West-Indian Company, the Dutch attack on Bahia de Todos os Sanctos in Brasil in 1624-1625, the circumnavigation of Jacques d'Hermite, etc. But, most important, on page 273 mention is made of the sending by the West-Indian Company in 1624 of the first settlers to the New Netherlands! The book is beautifully produced, with exceptionally fine plates by the most gifted book illustrators of the period - which was, according to H. de La Fontaine Verwey, the 'Golden Age' of Dutch book illustrations -, and very finely printed, with the use of a rich variety of types: Roman, Gothic, and Civilite. From the musical point of view the song book is of main importance, as most of the songs were recently written, several set to melodies of English or French origin. Many of them still belong to the most popular Dutch songs of today. Valerius came to live in Vere in Zeeland in 1592, and became the city's notary in 1606, and member of the City Council in 1616. He worked to his death in January 1625 on his <I>Neder-Landtsche Gedenck-Clanck</I>, a real monument of the Dutch struggle for freedom. The book was published by the heirs of the author, and dedicated to the States of Zeeland.Fine copy, with ample margins, and with the mostly lacking Errata-leaf. A few quires at the end with light waterstains at lower right corners.
