BEETON [I], Mrs.: The 'All About It' Books. Mrs. Beeton's Dictionary of Every-Day Cookery. 'Trifles constitute Perfection' . THE ORIGINAL EDITION IN CONTEMPORARY BINDING, S O Beeton, 1865

8vo., First Edition, with numerous woodcut illustrations in the text, fore-edges lightly dust-soiled; contemporary half coarse-grain morocco, marbled boards, brown endpapers, neatly rebacked to style, corners mildly bruised else a very good, clean copy in sympathetically restored period binding. With the obituary leaf at end. 'Many wishes have been expressed to the Authoress of the Book of Household Management that a volume of Recipes in Cookery should be written which could be sold at a price somewhere between the seven-and-sixpenny Household Management and the Shilling Cookery Book. Accordingly Mrs. Beeton has prepared a Collection of Recipes, and of other Practical Information concerning the Dressing and Serving of Family Fare...No pains have been thought too great to make little things clearly understood. Trifles constitute perfection. It is just the knowledge or ignorance of little things that usually makes the difference between the success of the careful and experienced housewife or servant, and the failure of her who is careless and inexperienced' (Publisher's Preface). Her final work, Isabella Beeton's 'Dictionary' was written at Mount Pleasant, the Beetons' bungalow at Greenhithe in Kent. As stated in the Preface the book was designed to full the gap between her classic (but highly-priced) 'Book of Household Management' and the cheaper 'Cookery'. The work was completed whilst she was in the last stages of pregnancy with her son Mayston; indeed, her great-niece and biographer Nancy Spain tells us that she corrected the proofs during labour. She died of puerperal fever shortly after giving birth 'leaving behind her some uncompleted garments for her baby. This was the only task she left unaccomplished' (Spain p.174). A key feature of the 'Dictionary' is the arrangement of its subject matter - recipes, menus, implements and so on - in alphabetical order for easy reference. It is her only work so presented and to our knowledge the first compilation of its kind. Although a considerable success, copies (especially of the first edition) are very difficult to find. Isabella Beeton died at the tragically young age of only 28, but she changed the face of cookery and household literature forever. EXTREMELY SCARCE, THE MORE SO IN THIS CONDITION AND BINDING. Cagle 562, recording only the BMC and NUC (NYPL) copies.

[BEETON, (I), Mrs].: Mrs. Beeton's Cookery Book. With Sections on Marketing, Laundry Work, Carving, Table Napkins, Labour-Saving, Household Hints, Trussing, Table Decorations, Ward Lock, n.d. [c.1950]

8vo., with a coloured frontispiece, 3 coloured plates and 16 plates in monochrome; original red cloth, backstrip lettered in black, very neatly recased, covers mildly age-marked else a very good, clean copy. Complete with front and rear trade advertisement endpapers. 'The only cookery book to have survived two World Wars and emerged at the end with its indispensability unaffected' (Preface). A popular abridgement of Isabella's masterpiece 'The Book of Household Management', 'The Englishwoman's Cookery Book' first appeared in 1863. In keeping with the publisher's natural desire to capitalise on a fast-broadening audience it was several times reissued during the seventies and eighties. In 1890 it reappeared with the new title 'Mrs. Beeton's Cookery Book and Household Guide', later truncated simply to 'Mrs. Beeton's Cookery Book'. The evolution of this work is a fascinating reflection of social trends over almost a century; here for instance the section on 'Laundry' replaces the elbow-grease of numberless kitchen-maids with a competent assessment of the latest washing, wringing and ironing machines.
