Weiss, Karl: The Little Book of Bees (Little Bks.). New York, NY, U.S.A. Springer-Verlag New York, Incorporated, 2002. ISBN: 0387952527
Zustand: Schlecht, VIII, 163 p. 24 illus. About this book The more we learn about bees, the more extraordinary they seem. They have five eyes. Their fertilized eggs hatch as females; unfertilized eggs become males. They beat their wings at a rate of almost 200 cycles per second, but fly at only 10 or 15 miles per hour. In the course of a lifetime, a typical worker bee will produce less than a tenth of a teaspoon of honey, yet a single hive's population can produce as much as 2 pounds of honey a day. A queen bee, in a single day, will lay her weight in eggs - as many as 1,500 in an uninterrupted 24-hour period. And to communicate with each other bees do make sounds, but mostly they dance in order to share information on the distance and direction to the nearest food source. This book provides the newcomer a first view into the extraordinary and surprisingly complex and highly organized world of bees. The book describes their evolution, and explains the differences between wild bees and honey-bees. It also sheds light on bee society, with its amazing rituals related to work, reproduction, defense of the hive, and most amazingly, communication. The author also explains the critical role that bees and beekeeping play for human society, and offers advice for those interested in raising bees themselves. Dr. Karl Weiss is an entomologist and the director of the Bavarian Institution for Beekeeping at Erlangen, Germany. He is engaged in theoretical as well as applied apicultural research. Weiss is the author of numerous scientific and popular publications on bees and is considered one of Germany's foremost authorities on apiculture. Written for general readers ISBN 0387952527

Block, Francesca Lia: WASTELAND (AGELESS BOOKS SERIES) New York HarperCollins Children's Books 2003
ISBN: 0-06-028644-X New

ABOUT THE BOOK Wasteland (Ageless Books Series) ANNOTATION A brother and sister must deal with terrible consequences when their love for each other stretches past acceptable boundaries. FROM THE PUBLISHER Lex and his sister, Marina, are inseparable. The air they share has always been light and boundless, but now Lex is gone. When the relationship that felt whole shatters irrevocably, Marina needs her friend West to help piece the fragments of herself together. But Marina will never be truly complete until she faces the past that is haunting her. With sensitivity and refinement, Francesca Lia Block has woven a story of love's intensity -- its ability to tear apart, its power to transcend. Wasteland is a masterful novel, told with the unique voice and style that Block's fans have come to expect. FROM THE CRITICS Publishers Weekly Teenaged Marina must come to terms with her brother's death. In a starred review, PW called this novel "a picture-perfect vision of mid-1970s Los Angeles, shimmering with magical realism and delicately overlaid with allusions to T.S. Eliot's The Waste Land." Ages 12-up. (Sept.) Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information. Children's Literature - Christopher Moning Lex and Marina are about as close as brother and sister can get. But are they too close? This unique novel takes on disturbing themes of incest, teen suicide, and loss. When Lex kills himself, Marina is devastated, filled with unanswered questions, and left to wonder if she is to blame for her brother's death. Her friend from school, West, helps her resolve some issues, and while digging into Lex's past, they unearth more mysteries. Together they explore Lex's old haunts in the California valley. Eventually they track down a never-heard-from father. The ending contains an unexpected twist. It takes some patience getting into Lia Block's unusual style of narration-she employs the first-person viewpoints of Marina and Lex, italicized from beyond the grave, as well as a third-person narration of events from West's viewpoint. But the ride is well worth the effort. Lia Block respects the intelligence and commitment of her audience. She has a gift for language: "We keep burning in the brown smog pit. The girls swarm in their black moth dresses...Rats click my head. Everything broken." Kudos to her for tackling unsettling themes without forcing a happy ending. 2003, Joanna Cotler Books/HarperCollins, Ages 12 to 16. VOYA - Melissa Potter This sensitive portrayal of a brother-sister love relationship comes off much more realistically than V. C. Andrews's Flowers in the Attic series and much less disturbingly than Carolyn Coman's Bee and Jacky (Front Street, 1998/VOYA December 1998). As the story is told slowly, from different viewpoints and moving around in time, readers learn that Marina's grief over her brother's suicide is understandably tremendous. Later, readers eventually absorb not only the details of their relationship but also why his sacrifice was in vain. Although Block could not have done a better job with her subject, the book might require more than one reading to pick up on the subtleties of the story. The extensive use of the pronoun "you" throughout most of the book makes it confusing at first, because the voice keeps changing, and it takes a while to figure out who is talking when. Eventually it sorts itself out and the "you" device even makes sense, as the two main characters seem bonded together as one, both spiritually and romantically. Knowing who is talking frees the reader to explore references to T. S. Eliot and probe more deeply into the sufferings of the main characters. <P> Nevertheless the audience for this book must be able to appreciate the prose style and take the time to distinguish between characters in order to make it through to the final ironic twist. Save it for sophisticated high school readers. Teen writers may savor Block's descriptions and her ability to express mood and emotion in this title that is recommended for large public libraries because of the subject matter Soft Cover 5-1/2 x 7-1/2" Uncorrected Proof
