NEMIUS, Joannes (Jan GOVERTS from 's-Hertogenbosch). Ulularum speculum, alias Triumphus humanae stultitiae, vel Tylus Saxo, nunc primum Latinate donatus. (Utrecht, Herman van Borculo?), 1563.
Second edition of one of the rarest Tyl Ulenspiegel (Till Owlglass) versions: the first adaptation of the entire story of Tyl Ulenspiegel in verses: the adaptation in Neo-Latin by Joannes Nemius (c. 1520-end 16th century). These tales of funny pranks were first published in a book that was first printed around 1500 as Ein kurzweiliges Buch von Till Eulenspiegel aus dem Lande Braunschweig (A Brief Book on Till Owlglass from Braunschweig Country), and attributed to Hermann Bote. It is one of the most popular books ever that originates in German, and has been translated into many languages. The book consists of farce tales, and Till is a clown. The very popular text of the Ulenspiegel circulated in German and Dutch prose versions in Northwest Europe and Nemius has based his Neo-Latin poetical version on the Dutch edition published by Michiel Hillen van Hoochstraten in Antwerp between 1525 and 1546. Nemius's text was first published in Utrecht, by Herman Borculo in 1558 with the title Triumphus humanae stutitiae, vel Tylus Saxo, and reprinted in Zutphen by C. Lomeyer in 1641. The approbation at the end of the present edition is taken from the first Utrecht edition, mentioning Herman Borculo as the printer. Whether our second edition is actually also printed by Borculo is not certain, but the STCN attributes the edition to him. The booklet is dedicated to Simon Pelgrom and printed in italics and roman marginalia; on the verso of the title are laudatory poems by Petr. Apherdianus and Ch. Schindelius. The poet and humanist Joannes Nemius was born in 's-Hertogenbosch and took his Latinized name from his birthplace: '(Duke's)-bosch' = forest = nemius. He has matriculated at the University of Cologne in 1537 and became a teacher of Latin and rector of the Latin schools at Nijmegen, Amsterdam and 's-Hertogenbosch. He was a fiery admirer of Erasmus and wrote his Ulenspiegel adaptation in the spirit of Erasmus's Laus stultitiae, referring even to its title. It is a description on the 'World upside down' also in the tradition of the 'Narrenschiff' or 'Ship of Fools', centred on the topoi 'Mundus reversus' and 'Memento mori'.
Fine copy of this rare edition.
