In het eerste deel belicht hij het levensverhaal van McCrae (1872-1918), van zijn wieg in Guelph (Canada) tot aan zijn graf in Wimereux (Frankrijk). Hij wijdt uit over zijn afkomst, studies, strijd in de Boerenoorlog, artsenloopbaan, enz. Heel wat aandacht gaat naar McCrae's verblijf aan het front. Nauwkeurig beschrijft Verleyen de omstandigheden waarin McCrae het gedicht schreef en hoe het zo beroemd werd. Uiteraard ontbreken de vertalingen niet die bekende Vlaamse dichters van 'In Flanders Fields' maakten.
