Markus, R. A.: From Augustine to Gregory the Great. History and Christianity in Late Antiquity, von R. A. Markus, London, Variorum Reprints 1983. ISBN: 0870781178
Aus dem Vorwort: "The essays gathered in this volume are, with a few exceptions, studies written since the completion of my Saeculum: History and society in the theology of Saint Augustine (Cambridge, 1970) and represent the main directions which my interests have insisted on taking since I worked on that book. The few exceptions are the intellectual bridges which link the old with the new preoccupations. Like most scholars, I have found one thing leading to another, new interests arising from the old. Research projects can sometimes be contained within firmly drawn limits; trying to understand a slice of the past is more often a matter of trying out an idea, following up its implications, elaborating half-formed interpretations, discarding, starting again, sometimes half-way back along the line, often right from the start. Overlaps, subsequent revisions, qualifications and shifts in emphasis are inescapable. My long sustained dialogue with Augustine of Hippo had gradually revealed to me the central thrust of my enquiries: to try to understand what is involved in the ways in which a social and religious group, in this case that of the Christians of Late Antiquity, have seen themselves in relation to their fellow men and to other groups in their society; how they have tried to define what set them apart from their contemporaries in belief, in their religious practice, or in the subtler ways we tend to lump together as their 'culture'. One crucial dimension of such a sense of a group's identity is always, or almost always, encapsulated in its way of seeing or reconstructing its own past. Christian self-awareness has always been heavily laden with its burden of a historical consciousness. The studies in the first section are concerned (I-III) with the genesis and the development of this historical vision of the Church's own past and (IV and V) with the conflicts with attitudes to the Roman past current among pagans of the fourth and fifth centuries, which helped to sharpen Christian self-awareness in their regard (...)" - Einband mit Lichtkante.
