Bx-8; Oxford Palaeographical Handbooks.; 4to 11" - 13" tall; 24 pages; From the mid twelfth century onwards, the nature of the developments which took place in English book hands was largely determined by two factors: the increasing demand for books, and the increase in the size of the works to be copied. The secularization of learning and the rise of the universities created a voracious demand for texts and commentaries. At the same time improving standards of literacy led to a demand from a wide range of patrons for books of a more general nature. In such circumstances speed and ease of writing became increasingly important. Scribes began to use different kinds of handwriting for different classes of books, and as a result a new 'hierarchy' of scripts arose, each with its own sequence of development. Towards the end of the thirteenth century the cursive script which had recently been evolved for the preparation of documents was introduced into books. A hierarchy also arose in the cursive script itself, as scribes began to devise more than one way of writing depending on the degree of formality they required. Eventually the varieties of cursive usurped the functions of other scripts in the copying of nearly all kinds of books and documents. "English Cursive Book Hands" illustrates the developments which took place in the cursive handwriting used in England for writing books.

Hardcover Very Good in Very Good dust jacket Edition: First Edition; First Printing Hardcver. 8vo. University Press of Kansas. 1998. 315 pgs. DJ in excellent shape, unclipped and with no tears present. No ownership marks present. Text is clean and free of marks, binding tight and solid, boards clean with no wear present. 284; 1.4 x 9.34 x 6.31 Inches; 315 pages; One of the most important public figures in antebellum America, Winfield Scott is known today more for his swagger than his sword. "Old Fuss and Feathers" was a brilliant military commander whose tactics and strategy were innovative adaptations from European military theory; yet he was often underappreciated by his contemporaries and until recently overlooked by historians. <P>Although John Eisenhower's recently published <I>Agent of Destiny</I> provides a solid summary of Scott's remarkable life, Timothy D. Johnson's much deeper critical exploration of this flawed genius will become the standard work. Thoroughly grounded in an essential understanding of nineteenth-century military professionalism, Johnson's work draws extensively on unpublished sources to reveal neglected aspects of Scott's life, present a complete view of his career, and accurately balance criticism and praise. <P>Johnson dramatically relates the key features of Scott's career: how he led troops to victory in the War of 1812 and the Mexican War, fought against the Seminoles and Creeks, and was instrumental in professionalizing the U.S. Army, which he commanded for two decades. He also tells how Scott tried to introduce French methods into army tactical manuals, and how he applied his study of the Napoleonic Wars during the Mexico City campaign but found European strategy of little use against Indians. Johnson further suggests that Scott's creation of an officer corps that boasted Grant, Lee, McClellan, and other veterans of the Mexican War raises important questions about his influence on Civil War generalship. <P>More than a military history, this book explains how Scott's aristocratic pretensions were out of place with emerging notions of equality in Jacksonian America and made him an unappealing political candidate in his bid for the presidency. Johnson recounts the details of Scott's personality that alienated nearly everyone who knew him, as well as the unsavory methods Scott used to promote his career and the scandalous ways he attempted to alleviate his lifelong financial troubles. <P>Although Scott's legendary vanity has tarnished his place among American military leaders, he also possessed great talent and courage. Johnson's biography offers the most balanced portrait available of Scott by never losing sight of the whole man. <P>This book is part of the <I>Modern War Studies</I> series.
PASCAL, Blaise (1623-1662).
"The reader will find questions asked and unanswered which take him far beyond the age-old controversy between faith and reason, and an equally penetrating light cast on some relatively minor problem. Pascal's work has, in fact, the marks of genius, exploring and stating all that can be said on both sides of the question it investigates" (PMM). (Paris, 2011). Scarce first edition (dite Edition de Port-Royal) of the chief work of Blaise Pascal, one of the most fascinating figures in the history of Western Philosopy. Pascal was not a theologian but an outstanding mathematician and physicist and his many-sided genius and his unequaled command of the French language make him one of the most inspiring and thought-provoking of writers. In his 'Pensees', in which the reader "will find questions asked and unanswered which take him far beyond the age-old controversy between faith and reason, and an equally penetrating light cast on some relatively minor problem. Pascal's work has, in fact, the marks of genius, exploring and stating all that can be said on both sides of the question it investigates" (PMM). Pascal fills a major place in the history of ideas both for his analysis of Christianity and for his scientific works. Closely associated with the society of Port-Royal Pascal left the manuscript of the Pensees unfinished, with many notes of varying sizes pinned together. The editors copied all the materials exactly as the author had left hem but published only those portions that they felt were completed, organizing them as they saw fit. A so-clled 'Preedition' of roughly thirty to fourty copies was printed in June/July 1769 for submission to the censors and selected exponants of the French clergy. Only two slightly varying copies have survived and are kept today in the National Library in Paris and in the library of Troyes. Those two copies were used by the printer of this 'edition original': "L'examen attentif mene par Jean Mesnard [en 2002] montre que le texte de 1670 provient des deux Copies ... " (Jean-Robert Armogathe). It was distributed to the bookshops in January 1670, a new edition with 334 pages appeared within a few months, followed by a third edition with 348 pages and also dated 1670. After the fourth edition - but called in its title 'troisieme edition' - published by Desprez in 1671 unnumberable editions and translations were published throughout Europe. A first English translation by John Walker appeared in 1688 and the first German edition was printed at Augsburg in 1710. - The last ten leaves with narrow light waterstain in outer margin, a very fine and complete copy of this rarity. - Contemporary sprinkled dark brown calf, back on five raised bands gilt.
