L'ouvrage mis en chantier en 1929 ne sera publie qu'en 1933. Soucieux d'utiliser des couleurs qui sauront garder leur vivacite avec le temps et un procede d'impression qui rendra la clarete desiree, Gagnon decide que les illustrations de Maria Chapdelaine seront des gouaches, mesurant en moyenne une vingtaine de centimetres, qu'il retouchera a la main avec des crayons noir et de couleur. Ce travail unique fera de Maria Chapdelaine un chef d'oeuvre absolu du livre illustre moderne.
