Signed and dated 22 April 1922 Amsterdam". Marcus Aurelius was born in AD 121. He died in AD 180. His early education was overseen by the Emperor Hadrian, and he was later adopted by the Emperor Antoninus Pius in AD 138. Initially he was educated in rhetoric undertaken by Fronto, Marcus later studied philosophy. Marcus became Emperor in AD 161, initially with Lucius Verus Sole Emperor in AD 169. He established four Chairs of Philosophy in Athens, one for each of the principal philosophical traditions (Platonic, Aristotelian, Stoic, and Epicurean). This edition by Thomas Gataker 1574 - 1654 is a justly famous early edition of the Meditations containing a substantial commentary. Marcus' reputation as a philosopher rests upon one work, the Meditations. The Meditations take the form of a personal notebook and were probably written while Marcus was on campaign in central Europe, c. AD 171-175. The entries appear to be in no particular order and may simply be in the original order of composition. Thomas Gataker (September, 1574 - July, 1654) was an English clergyman and theologian. Thomas Gataker:" He was born in London and educated at St John's College, Cambridge. From 1601 to 1611 be held the appointment of preacher to the society of Lincoln's Inn, which he resigned on accepting the rectory of Rotherhithe. In 1642 he was chosen a member of the assembly of divines at Westminster, and annotated for that assembly the books of Isaiah, Jeremiah and Lamentations. He disapproved of the introduction of the Covenant and declared himself in favour of episcopacy. He was one of the forty-seven London clergymen who disapproved of the trial of Charles I. He was married four times, and died in July 1654. An edition of Marcus Antoninus (1652), which, according to Hallam, is the "earliest edition of any classical writer published in England with original annotations," and, for the period at which it was written, possesses remarkable merit. (= Encyclop. Brittanica. 1911.) KEYWORDS: ethics and philosophy
