A lovely copy in green cloth with a full-page color paper illustration pasted onto the cover and gilt lettering on spine that looks bright and shiny. With illustrations by Arthur I. Keller and line dr awings by Florence W. Swan. With 12 full-color ti ssue-guarded illustrations This is the centennial edition of the birth of Henry W. Longfellow. The illustrations in this volume have the historical Cr aigie House in Cambridge for their background- the house where the poem was written. The artist vis ited the house and made his drawings from the very room in which Longfellow hung his own crane in 18 43. Slight foxing to the eps and and an attractive exlibris pasted onto fep. Overall NF.

Bern, schönes nur leicht beriebenes Ex. ------------------ Das Lied von Hiawatha (im englischen Original The Song of Hiawatha) ist ein langes Gedicht in Form eines Epos, verfasst von Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (1807-1882) Es erzählt vom Leben des Indianers Hiawatha, der im 15. Jahrhundert gelebt hat. Nach einer Einleitung schildern 22 Abschnitte Hiawathas Leben von seiner Kindheit über seine Hochzeit mit Minehanna bis zu seinem Tod. Dabei flocht Longfellow auch weitere Legenden der Indianer mit ein. Eben das Einbringen weiterer Legenden, aber auch die Metrik des Werks erinnern an das finnische Nationalepos Kalevala. Eine Beeinflussung ist durchaus möglich, da Longfellow nicht nur des Finnischen mächtig, sondern auch an der deutschen Übersetzung des Kalevala beteiligt war. Diese Dichtung Longfellows ist in der Symphonie Aus der Neuen Welt von Antonin Dvorak musikalisch verarbeitet worden. Der englische Komponist Samuel Coleridge-Taylor vertonte 1900 drei Szenen, nämlich Hiawathas Hochzeit, den Tod der Minnehana und Hiawathas Fortgang in drei Kantaten für Orchester, Chor und Solisten. 1972 liess das Komponistenduo Chinn/Chapman, Hiawatha in den Glam-Rock Song "Wig-Wam Bam" der englischen Gruppe Sweet mit einfliessen. Auch Mike Oldfield benutzte 1978 Teile aus dem Hiawatha-Poem für sein Album "Incantations"
