Hardcover Very Good- in Fair dust jacket Contains six stories: Bannerman's original "The Story of Little Black Sambo" and five stories by Frank Ver Beck. Ver Beck's stories are "Little Black Sambo and . . ." the Baby Elephant, the Tiger Kitten, the Monkey People, the Bears' Den, the Crocodiles. Front panel of dust jacket shows a mammy archetype serving pancakes to an African-American boy (Sambo). Bannerman's story retains her original illustrations. Ver Beck's illustrations are of an Indian Sambo. Defects: Book is slightly dusty along top edge of front board. Edges lightly rubbed and corners slightly bumped. 3"-long closed tear to bottom edge of front free endpaper. All pages clean and bright with no chips, smudges, writing, etc. There appear to be two or three minor edge-tears throughout, but none are any longer than 1/2". Binding is tight. Dust jacket is in fair condition. The front panel is heavily creased at the lower corner and there is a 3"-long closed tear starting from upper corner. Front joint heavily rubbed, with another 3"-long closed tear at head of spine. Dime-sized chip from foot of spine. Moderately heavy creasing to lower edge of rear panel, including a few small, closed tears.
