Das Jugendbildnis in der Selbstbiographie von John Constable wurde nach einer Zeichnung von Gardiner lithographiert von Maguire, während Lane das Porträt des alten Constable nach einer Zeichnung von Leslie ausführte. Die deutsche Übersetzung des Werkes richtete sich nach der von der Chiswick-Presse 1845 gedruckten zweiten, wesentlich vermehrten englischen Auflage und gibt Constables eigenhändige Niederschriften getreu wieder. Die Selbstbiographie "gibt in verdichteter Form authentischen Bericht über das menschliche Wesen des grossen englischen Bahnbrechers der modernen Landschaftsmalerei, über sein Denken und Fühlen, seine Schicksale, seine Arbeiten und seine künstlerischen Anschauungen" (BB 2.10.1911).
