PARIVAL, Jean Nicolas DE. Les Delices de la Hollande, Oeuvre Panegirique, avec un traite du Gouvernement, et un abrege de ce qui s'est passe de plus memorable jusques a l'an de grace 1650. Leiden, Pierre Leffen, 1651.
Rare first edition of this popular and very successful cultural history of Holland, also to be used as a traveller's guide by Jean Nicolas de Parival (1605-1669). The author, born in Verdun, came to the Netherlands in 1624, where he stayed for 26 years. Apart from being a wine-merchant, he also taught French at Leyden - both Dutch and foreign students and Leiden citizen followed his lessons. He published also books on French grammar and conversation.More than a short history of Holland, the present work is a kind of 'cultural history' of Holland offering pleasant reading on the customs and morals of the province, largely based, as Parival mentions in his preface, on the works of Boxhorn, Strada and Pontanus, but on the other hand containing much 'faits divers' not found elsewhere. There are chapters on traffic, the trade, religions, government, nobility, the important cities, history, etc. The work was a precursor of a new genre consisting of series of books on the 'Delices' of other countries. It was a great success: more than 16 editions appeared till the second half of the eighteenth century. In 1661 a Dutch translation was published in Amsterdam: De vermaeckelijckheden van Holland. Our copy has an interesting provenance. On the title the nineteenth-century owner 'A. Horn' has entered his name, making himself known on the facing fly-leaf as 'Docteur Aubert H(orn), 50 Rue de Moscou, Paris, who has bought the book on 28 October 1898. He added also a note on the red wax seal on the title: 'Cachet de Pologne', being probably the seal of a Polish nobleman (studying in Leiden ca. 1650?). The coat-of-arms is divided in seven fields: two riders on horseback, two crosswise flags, two crowns and a powder horn in the middle.
Fine copy, with red wax seal on title and manuscript ownership's signature in ink 'A. Horn'.
