This specially illustrated book club edition (taken from the 1979 Bantam edition) features drawings by Fredric Finkelstein; the cover art is by Tom Lea and is taken from a U.S. Army photograph. Maps are by Benjamin F Klaessig and Alan McKnight. Originally published by Random House in 1957, this modern military classic has become scarce in any early edition. Rear gutter code ''M32'' indicates a printing date of August, 1982. Shortly after Pearl Harbor, Robert Leckie enlisted in the Marine Corps. From Guadalcanal to Peleliu, Leckie presents a front line firsthand account of the Marines in the Pacific. Leckie served as a scout and machine-gunner in the 1st Marine Division and participated in every major campaign except Okinawa. He was wounded at Peleliu, ending his combat tour. This illustrated hardcover edition was only available through the Military Book Club.
