** Erste öffentliche Ausgabe.- Thomas Edward Lawrence (1888-1935), bekannt als Lawrence von Arabien, war britischer Archäologe, Geheimagent und Schriftsteller. "Bekannt wurde Lawrence vor allem durch seine Beteiligung an dem von den Briten forcierten Aufstand der Araber gegen das Osmanische Reich während des ersten Weltkrieges. Seinen umfangreichen Bericht über den arabischen Aufstand, dessen Manuskript er z.T. in Ägypten 1919 verlor und dessen Rest ihm in Großbritannien gestohlen wurde, musste er erneut schreiben. Es wurde 1926 unter dem Titel The Seven Pillars of Wisdom (dt. Die sieben Säulen der Weisheit) veröffentlicht und zu einem Klassiker der Weltliteratur." (Wikipedia). Die Ausgabe 1926 erschien als Privatdruck. Die erste öffentliche Ausgabe erschien im Juli 1935, der wegen der großen Nachfrage drei weitere Auflagen im August folgten.- Die vergoldete Deckelvignette, die sich auch auf dem Originaleinband befindet, zeigt zwei gekreuzte arabische Schwerter mit dem Text "the sword also means clean-ness & death", zitiert aus einem Brief vom 27.10.1922 von T. E. Lawrence an E. Kennington. Das fliegende Vorsatzblatt mit den zwei kleinen Stempeln des 1761 in York gegründeten Antiquariats "SOTHERAN SACKVILLE ST. LONDON" und des Londoner Buchbinders "BOUND BY MORRELL".
