Gorman, Ed and Breen, Jon L. [edited By and with an Introduction By Jon L. Breen]: Sleuths of the Century, New York, NY Carroll & Graf Publishers 2000
ISBN: 0-7867-0709-7 Fine in Fine Dust Jacket Dust Jacket Design By Tony Greco & Associates
x, 582pp. Black faux quarter-cloth, red paper boards, cream endpapers. Dust jacket price 26.00. SIGNED BY ED GORMAN, BILL PRONZINI, TONY HILLERMAN. The editors of 'The Year's 25 Finest Crime and Suspense Stories' and its successor 'The World's Finest Mystery and Crime Stories' put together this definitive anthology of the 20th-century detective. 25 classic and contemporary stories, all by masters of the form. " Sam Spade and Philip Marlowe, Lord Peter Wimsey and Hercule Poirot, Matt Scudder and Easy Rawlins, Spenser and Dalgliesh - they stand among the most popular of twentieth-century heroes. And now the award-winning mystery novelist Ed Gorman and novelist-critic Jon L. Breen present a full century of the world's favorite sleuths in tales by such classic writers as G. K. Chesterton, Ellery Queen, Dorothy Sayers, and Agatha Christie as well as contemporary giants like Sharyn McCrumb, Walter Mosley, Ed McBain, Lawrence Block, P. D. James, and Ruth Rendell. A hefty, handsome volume, 'Sleuths of the Century' also offers serious suspense from Dashiell Hammett, Patricia Highsmith, Tony Hillerman, Rex Stout, Donald E. Westlake, and John D. MacDonald. Crossing the decades with a gallery of sleuths impeccably styled for every generation, this collection provides exciting, literate tales of detection and danger that will keep the reader on tenterhooks well into the next century." - paperback edition. " It was predictable, perhaps, that a collection of short stories would be published around the first of the year representing the best mystery writers of the twentieth century. Less predictable, though, is the quality of this collection. The roster of contributors inevitably includes familiar names--Sayers, Rendell, Block, McBain, Westlake, Mosley, Eberhart, Hillerman, Paretsky, etc.--but, refreshingly, some of the stories here have never (or infrequently) been anthologized, and others, like Gardner's Perry Mason story or Hill's Dalziel and Pascoe adventure, represent rare short-form appearances of well-known detectives. Readers who consider themselves well versed in the canon of their favorite character may be surprised to stumble upon something they've never seen before. Despite the focus on well-known writers, then, there is no "been there, done that" stigma attached to this fine collection. It is sure to appeal both to veteran crime-fiction readers and to those new to the genre." - David Pitt, Booklist. Contents: Introduction by Jon L. Breen; The Phantom Motor by Jacques Futrelle; The Secret Garden by G. K. Chesterton; Problem at Sea by Agatha Christie; The Piscatorial Farce of the Stolen Stomach by Dorothy L. Sayers; The Adventure of the Glass-Domed Clock by Ellery Queen; Madame Maigret's Admirer by Georges Simenon; The Wrong Problem by John Dickson Carr; The Next Witness by Rex Stout; The Case of the Irate Witness by Erle Stanley Gardner; The King in Yellow by Raymond Chandler; The Pink Caterpillar by Anthony Boucher; The Suicide by Ross Macdonald; The Empty Hours by Ed McBain; The Heroine by Patricia Highsmith; The Death of a Bum by Donald E. Westlake; Breathe No More by John D. MacDonald; When the Wedding Was Over by Ruth Rendell; Like a Lamb to Slaughter by Lawrence Block; The Witch, Yazzie, and the Nine of Clubs by Tony Hillerman; Cat's-Paw by Bill Pronzini; Somewhere in the City by Marcia Muller; Old Rattler by Sharyn McCrumb; Dalziel's Ghost by Reginald Hill; The Watts Lions by Walter Mosley;Grace Notes by Sara Paretsky. Bill Pronzini wrote in 1992: "The western and historical fiction of Ed Gorman is individualized by the same 'noir' qualities as his contemporary crime and horror fiction; peopled by the same sort out-of-the-mainstream characters." Westlake, The Rest of Her Life by Steve Yarbrough. "Of the almost 600 mystery stories published in 1997, guest editor Sue Grafton has selected twenty of the finest for this installment of the acclaimed annual series. Authors range from the established (like Lawrence Block, Mary Higgins Clark, and Walter Mosley) to newcomers like David Ballard. All the tales are grounded in mystery fundamentals of crime and (usually) punishment, but each contains some edge or narrative experimentation that sets it apart from the flock. Block's "Keller on the Spot," for example, is a sardonic tale of a killer who saves the grandson of his next hit and winds up questioning his professional path. Stuart Kaminsky's entry, "Find Miriam," is a first-person narrative by Lew Fonesca, a detective who makes his living "finding people, asking questions, answering to nobody." In this case, however, the finding isn't the puzzle--the real puzzle is his client, a troubled husband whose wife has left him without an apparent motive. Throughout, Grafton's tastes run to the literary, and she is fascinated by the cathartic quality of each story. As she writes in her introduction: "Nowhere is iniquity, wrongdoing, and reparation more satisfying to behold than in the well-crafted yarns spun by the writers represented here. While we're plunged into the darkness by their skill and imagination, we're simultaneously reassured that we are safe... from ourselves." --Patrick O'Kelley.
