[KRENZ, Kenneth.]. TWO VOLUME PHOTOGRAPHIC PHOTO ALBUMS OF HONG KONG, KOWLOON, JAPAN, MACAU, CANTON.
This is one of a pair of photo albums which were bound by Victorial Printing Press, Hong Kong, and have Chinese spine markings: they show the Chinese name: "Gan Law See" in Cantonese, or "Chian-Lan Shi" in Mandarin, which we assume is the Chinese name used by Mr. Kenneth Krenz from Michigan. The spine marks are "Ti er che" or volume 2; & "Ti san che" or volume 3, we have volumes 2 & 3 of a possible a 3 volume set, volume one is not present. * The albums were created and photographed by Kenneth Krenz, a young American diplomat, probably from Muskegon Michigan, who documented his life in photographs from 1915 through 1928.He was stationed at the United States Consulate General in Hong Kong from 1926, his signature is found on the first fly-leaf of both volumes. The years June 1926-1928 cover his live and adventures of travel throuoghout Asia & S.E. Asia. * The photographs are in general but not perfect chronological order, captioned and dated for the most part in pen. The photos follow his general trip via the S.S. PRESIDENT GRANT, to Hawaii, Japan, Philippines, Canton and eventually to Hong Kong, where he took up a new residence. * Based on the photos, that the album was begin while Mr.Krenz was still at home in North Michigan, where he & his friends took several motor car trips across the Canadian border into Ontario & Quebec. Some photos of this period date from 1915- 1924 and likely represent several journeys. The album also contains personal photos of his friends, his girl friends, a dog & cat, and his circle of family and friends. * VOLUME 2: Contains 262 photographs, covering Michigan and Canada, Washington D.C. The album contains nice photos reco- rding his time on journeys throughout the Ontario and Quebec regions in the warm season via motor car. Some photos date 1919-1924. He traveled throughout the region, including to Niagra and other sites, faithfully recording photos for his album. * WASHINGTON D.C.: Being in the American diplomatic corps,he visited Washington D.C., where he photographed the State, War & Navy buildings, Congressional Library, White House [pre-fenced era!], Mount Vernon, Arlington Amphitheater, Washington Monument, Pennsy- lvania Ave. & Washington, Treasury, Capitol, Lincoln Memor- ial, Union Station Washington, and other national government buildings and monuments. We could assume also went to the State department, where he got his traveling orders and was posted to Hong Kong. * JOURNEY TO HONG KONG 1926: Arrival to Hong Kong about June 7, 1926 [per date found on a photo], where he began his work at the American Consulate General. With frequent visits to the adjacent countries, and cities within China: Hong Kong, Kowloon, Swatow, Canton, Amoy, Foochow, Hangchow & several other Chinese excursions. Macao 1927; Philippines: Manila, 1927 Saigon: 1928 voyage from Hong Kong aboard a war junk, with to Saigon, Pnom Penh, Angkor, Angkor Thom, Bangkok. * HAWAII: 1926 Album number 2 begins with photos of his journey and shows photos of his visits along the way, aboard the S.S. Presid- ent Grant. First stop was Hawaii, where he recorded photos of Waikiki [3] and Diamond Head [6], the Pali, Hawaii and of Molokai [leper island]. * JAPAN, YOKOHAMA 1926: Next stop Yokohama. The ablum actually begins with the first photographs showing infamous YOSHIWARA KADO MACHI or the new prostitution quarters located just behind Asakusa, in Tokyo. Given the fact that the photos of Japan are of this quarter, its women and a few others of women in the streets, one can surmize that Mr. Krenz had little else of interest to see in that country during his brief stay, so he may have sampled some of the pleasures of Japanese women. With a good number of other photos of the prostitution quarters, its girls, interiors of the prostitutes room, photos of a pair girls who "entertained" Mr. Krenz...after all one can not take such interior photos unless one is a guest and has the paid for the girls ! Other photos of Japanese women walking in the street [3], one may deduce what fascinated him about Japan. Few other photos of Japan. * PHILIPPINES: The next stop, Philippines: Polo Club Manila, Manila [many views], Baguio, Pasiguan, Walled city, 1928 photos, * CHINA: HONG KONG 1926-1928: We assume he arrived at Hong Kong in 1926, as the number of photos of this city and surrounding area are substantial in number and scope. Sulphur Channel, Hong Kong trading junks, Queen's Road, tram, Des Voeux Rd., Mt. Lodge from Mt. Kel- lett, The Praya, Victoria statue, Queen's Road 1926 dates. * KOWLOON: Rocks of Sung, Wellington St, * AMOY: Amoy junk * CANTON: Five-story pagoda, various views of buildings. * VOLUME 3: Contains 278 photographs. SAIGON, ANGKOR, BANGKOK & PIRATES, MANILA, HONG KONG: This part begins with a lovely series of photos on board a Chinese war junk, headed for Saigon. The Cantonese sailors wear the typical ethnic hats of Hong Kong natives, but these sailors are armed to the teeth. They wore "bandeloros" or belts full of bullet clips, carried rifles, and their vessel had a large number of ancient bronze cannon aboard. The ship was made of wood and has a large cloth sail, and aboard was a photo of our man, Mr.Krenz posing with a Cantonese sailor, both wear the typical broad-brim hat of the Canton/Hong Kong area people. A good photo of the ship and its cannon, crew, some of whom also wore pith helmets. There were even some Chinese women aboard who also carried rifles! One photo shows the crew at "Battle Stations" manning their guns ready for an attack from pirates...the last two photos show the two ca[tired pirates [Chinese [?] who are rope-bound hand and foot by crew members who stand armed guard over them. * Arrival in Saigon, 1928. Shows a photo of our man dressed in white with a pith helmet, caption reads: "Road Saigon-Pnom Penh," and the next few show Angkor, Bangkok, Palace grounds & the stunning Angkor Wat, Angkor Thom, with more views of Bangkok. He returned via Macau. * Macau: Macau 1927, Camoens Grotto Macau, Gambling street, various Macau views, close-up of gambling table & gamblers, Sikh police guards, * PHLIPPINES: 1927, The book continues with some 88 photographs of Manila,Cadiz, Negros Island, market, hemp fields, South Mindanao, Fuente Manila, Cebu, Intramuros, river, village scenes, Baguio Mt. Proo natives, churches, river junks, women, Fabrica, Davao, water buffalo, Igorrotes, and a nice photo of a stunningly beautiful Filipina woman ["Manila Belle" is the caption] aboard the SS ? Cavite 1927, and one more of her at the Manila Hotel, she holds an umbrella and looks directly at the camera for a classic pose. It seems that Kenneth made her acquaintance aboard the ship & continued the friendship at the Manila Hotel. More view of Manila, the river, Kadiz [sic], Negros, Toledo, hemp fields, Spanish fort in Cebu & another Filipina girl in Cebu, Mindanao, Iloilo, and more travel by ship through the Philippine Islands. A Cebu train ride, Manila the Pasig river view, sugar-cane in Negros Centrale, Hayon, Zamboanga, Fort Mckinley [the American Army Base], and the end of volume 3. * This volume contains photos of varying sizes, the largest 13.5 x 8.5, smallest 4 x 6 cm., average size the largest and 10.5 x 7 cm. All images are clear, majority are unfaded and clean, all are laid down on the album pages, one or two of which were skipped and have no photos. Most pages have from 2-3, or 4 photos per page on the average. * Names of people found in the album: Robinson, his colleague and friend who was also with the American Embassy in Hong Kong [see group photo and other photos of him]. Paul Cotton who's photo is shown as a member of the voyage aboard the U. S. PRESIDENT GRANT in Yokohama, April, 1926. "Muccio," Ramona Hayes and "Shantz" are among other cited in the photo captions. We think the maker of this album, Kenneth Krenz was a shy be-speckled man the third from the right in the large group photo taken on the balcony of the Hong Kong American Consulate...
