Charles Kingsley was born at Holne Vicarage, Dartmoor, Devon, on the 12th June 1819, educated at King's College, London, and Magdalene College, Cambridge, and died at Eversley, Hampshire, on the 23rd January 1875. His chief works are "Yeast" (1848); "Alton Locke" (1850); "Hypatia" (1853); "Westward Ho!" (1855); "The Heroes" (1856); "The Water Babies" (1863); and "Hereward the Wake" (1866); all of which, except "The Water Babies" are included in the Nelson Classics.
