KONRYU ZAN SENSO JI.. BANDO JYU SAN BAN: GOLDEN DRAGON MOUNTAIN TEMPLE NUMBER THIRTEEN KANNON SAMA [GO.
A LOVELY MINAITURE BUDDHIST SCROLL AND TALISMAN This is an actual charm used by tradesmen to place in their home around the new year. Tradesmen and others such as fire- men, carpenters, and the like go to their local Buddhist temple at New Years, and pray for health, wealth and good times. In exchange, the temple priests give these people a small "Omamori" or Charm, Talisman as a "defense" for the next year. This charm shows the names of the various and local people who visit that temple. These people make offer- ings called "Fuda" which are small woodblock-printed papers that are glued to the temple Torii gate, showing their name or their shop's name. They invoke a blessing or "Omori" or Buddhist protection by doing this. The temple is therefore responsible to protect & give them favor over the next year. This charm shows a large number of "Fuda" surrounding the central Buddhist figure, the Kannon or Goddess of Mercy. Above and surrounding this Kannon, is a printed type green border with a swastika at the center top, a common Buddhist symbol. The "Fuda" or names of the local tradesmen, fireman, or merchants are decorating this border. At the very top is a black and white woven ribbon used to suspend this from a hook placed on the wall. Just below that, is a red cinnabar seal "Bonji" or Japanese Sandscrit Buddhist character. To the right of this is another red cinnabar Japanese "Hanko" or seal stating "Bando Jusan Ban" or Bando Number Thirteen, indicating an alternate name of this temple. On the verso at the top is the black Sumi ink painted surname: "Kashisei," this name is also found on the front left corner as a small "Fuda" showing that this scroll clearly belonged to this person and member of that temple. Together with this, is an actual woodblock printed Fuda [talisman charm] 9 x 22.5 cm., consisting of the place: Edo, name of the person begging favor of the Gods for protection for next year: Genbo Akaba- ne, who is with the Yamashiroya [a store's name]. This Fuda was designed with fancy Kanji characters, and two others with red back grounds. A lovely and rare ephermeral example. Color scans can be sent by email.
