Die Begegnung mit John Cage 1958 in Darmstadt war ein Wendepunkt im Leben des Musiktheoretikers Heinz-Klaus Metzger. Denn die Zufallsoperationen des Amerikaners führten zu Ergebnissen, die dem Konstruktivismus der Darmstädter Serialisten mindestens ebenbürtig waren. Für Metzger war damit die abendländische Ästhetik insgesamt erschüttert. Er setzte sich vehement für Cage ein und interpretierte dessen anarchische Ästhetik als ein Modell für umfassende politische Freiheit. BR BR Legendär ist sein Essay "John Cage oder Die freigelassene Musik" von 1958. John Cage blieb bis an sein Lebensende eines seiner zentralen Themen. Heinz-Klaus Metzger und Rainer Riehn regten als Chefdramaturgen der Frankfurter Oper auch Cages "Europeras" (UA 1987) an. Eine Reihe von Cages Werken sind Metzger und Riehn gewidmet. BR BR Zum 100.
