Scholarly Paper aus dem Jahr 2001 im Fachbereich Theologie - Sonstiges, Note: good, Universität Leipzig, Sprache: Englisch, Abstract: James Arthur Baldwin was born to Emma Berdis Jones and an unknown father on August 2, 1924, in New York City. The fact that he did not know about the identity of his biological father haunted him all his life. Who was to become Baldwin's stepfather was a laborer and Pentecostal preacher who came - as part of the Great Migration - to New York in 1919 seeking better social conditions and economic opportunities. (Kenan 1994: 26) After he married her, he began to preach in storefront churches and made a living of a job he had in a bottle factory on Long Island, and although he worked steadily, until encroaching age and illness prohibited it, were his wages seldom high enough to feed his big family2, especially during the Great Depression. (Kenan: 27) As described in Notes of a Native Son this situation had contributed to his father's intolerable bitterness of spirit.(Kenan: 88) It was unrelieved bitterness and anger that drove [his father] away permanently in 1932. (Kenan: 27) James was very much influenced and shaped by his stepfather, and the problems that derived from his relationship to him became in my eyes a powerful motor for his poetry writings and determined his future decisions. To his father the young boys intelligence and his interest in books was but a source of danger, for the Bible was the only book worth reading. (Kenan: 29) If it wasn't for Orilla Bill Miller, a white woman from the Midwest who stepped up against his fathers objections, and for Gertrude Ayer, a black principal who encouraged the young boy to write stories, plays and poems, James would have been deprived of a valuable education, because in the Baldwin household education was suspect as a tool of the white devils not particularly useful to black men in a racist society that placed so many checks on their ambition. (Kenan: 31) James Baldwin was brought up in a household atmosphere of strict, even suffocating, religiosity (Kenan: 32) and his father lived like a prophet, in such unimaginably close communion with the Lord, that his long silence which were punctuated by moans and hallelujahs and snatches of old songs while he sat at the living room window never seemed strange to us. (Baldwin 1984: 89)

Dieser spricht 1931 in seinem Buch The Epic of America von dem "American dream, that dream of a land in which life should be better and richer and fuller for every man, withopportunity for each according to his ability or achievement." So stellt Richard Nixon die materielle Komponente des Traums heraus und nennt "full employment, better housing, excellence in education; in rebuilding our cities and improving our rural areas; in protecting our environment and enhancing the quality of life" als zentrale Elemente. Ronald Reagan erinnert an die Einzigartigkeit des amerikanischen Volkes und hebt den Sonderstatus hervor, welcher den USA in der Welt zukomme. Amerika sei "too great a nation to limit (them)selves to small dreams."

Scholary Paper aus dem Jahr 2007 im Fachbereich Anglistik - Kultur und Landeskunde, einseitig bedruckt, Note: keine, Universität Potsdam (Institut für Anglistik), 11 + 5 online Eintragungen im Literaturverzeichnis, Sprache: Englisch, Abstract: The Glorious Revolution of 1688 was a decisive event in the history of modern Europe and also of the English-speaking world; for it changed the character of English government, gave meaning to a political philosophy and contributed to the working out of a balance of power among nations (Ashley, 13). This revolution was successful; it undoubtedly contributed to the evolution of parliamentary democracy in England and of a balanced constitution in the United States of America. The Glorious Revolution lays claim to being the only political revolution that has not seen bloodshed, this is due to the fact that James II could not revolt to an invitation from the parliament to William of Orange (King of Holland) to assist in its administration. The importance of this revolution is highlighted by the commissioners' success in overturning the powers of the monarchy and establishing an elected parliament and a movement toward a constitutional monarchy. The first 'Bill of Rights', ensured this and indirectly invested in the rights of the individual to freedom from absolute power. As a precedent, the Glorious Revolution was an integral part of democratic development and the foundations for political revolution in England as well as in France and America. The Revolution happened during a period of intense intellectual ferment. It was a period when Europe emerged from the middle ages and the Modern Mind was born. It is impossible to ignore the contribution of philosophical figures like John Locke, Thomas Hobbes and Robert Filmer. They are perhaps the most significant thinkers of the 17th century. They had different ideas at slightly different times. In this paper I want to point out the causes and consequences of the Glorious Revolution; especially concerning philosophy. I will point out which events set the stage for the Revolution and will point out whether the events inspired political writing or whether political writing pushed forward the events.
