Anonymous: "Mr Whittington" (Premier of Clifford Grey, Greatrex Newman, and Douglas Furber's Musical at The London Hippodrome, London) - Theatre Programme, London The London Hippodrome 1934
Very Good

Unpaginated, but 32pp inc monochrome photo-portraits of Jack Buchanan, Elsie Randolph, Alfred Drayton, Fred Emney, and Kathleen Gibson and of the entire cast - Souvenir program for The London Hippodrome's 1934 Premier of the musical, "Mr Whittington" (Most often thought of as the subject for a Panto than a West End production). Starring Jack Buchanan, Elsie Randolph, Alfred Drayton, Fred Emney, and Kathleen Gibson, it had music written by John Green, Jack Waller and Joseph Tunbridge, with book by Clifford Grey, Greatrex Newman, and Douglas Furber. and was the story of the fabled Lord Mayor of London. It ran for 37 weeks,
Buchanan was a stage and screen actor, singer, producer and director who made his first appearance on the UK stage in 1912, and on Broadway in 1924 and his film debut in the silent cinema, in 1917. Like fellow Scot David Niven, Buchanan was renowned for his portrayal of the quintessential Englishman on stage and screen. In 1938, Buchanan performed the unusual feat of starring in the London stage musical "This'll Make You Whistle" while concurrently filming a movie version. The movie was released while the stage version was still running; thus the two productions competed with each other. Buchanan also was a financial backer for John Logie Baird's work to develop his television systems.
PROVENANCE: this item comes from the collection of H. W. Roxburgh of Liverpool, in whose extensive collection of theatrical ephemera this item was contained. It was purchased at Fellows and Sons Auction, Birmingham (UK) in Aug, 2007.
The covers and text are clean and bright. First Edition No Jacket Pamphlet 5.5 x 8.5"

Gould, George M. (With Jack London Bookplate): CONCERNING LAFCADIO HEARN With A Bibliography By Laura Stedman, Philadelphia (1908) George W. Jacobs & Company
Near Very Good

JACK LONDON'S COPY of an important biography of fellow (and somewhat contemporary author) Lafcadio Hearn. London's bookplate with design of wolf's head underneath his name in bold is pasted onto first front paste-down endpaper. This copy with some front hinge tenderness but still holding firmly in binding. Clean inside and out, but one of the photo plates (of Hearn in Martinique) is now missing. Perhaps pulled by London himself. In addtion to being a copy with a wonderful association to a well-known author, this is a book that provides valuable information on the printing history of Hearn's works, having a bibliography of 80 pages. First Edition Lacking Dust Jacket Brown/cream Cloth Octavo, 416pp FROM LIBRARY OF JACK LONDON
