[PSALMBOOK - GERMAN]. Amsterdam, Heinrich Weststein, 1698.
Ad 1: Late seventeenth-century Amsterdam edition of the well-known 'Lobwasser Psalter'. Ambrosius Lobwasser (1515-1585) worked as a lawyer and lecturer till 1550. During the next seven years he traveled as tutor to some young men of rank, and in 1557 became court councilor and chancellor at Meissen. At Bologna, in 1562, he attained the degree of doctor of laws. From 1563 to 1580, when he retired from active life, he was assessor and professor of law at Konigsberg. He was a thorough and versatile scholar, and more than once filled the office of rector of the university. Although a Lutheran by conviction, he was criticised by his coreligionists for the reason that he based his translation of the Psalter of Beza and Marot not on the original text, but on the Reformed French Psalter. His object was to popularize in Germany the melodies of the French Psalter, of the beauty of which he had received a deep impression during a long sojourn in Berry; and thus he adhered to the texts which served as channels for these melodies, in order that the meter and versification might accord with the French model. His work was primarily designed for private edification. The Psalter was completely rendered into German by 1562, but the publication was deferred till 1573. Although but a mediocre performance in point of language and practical objectiveness, the Psalter enjoyed a success not much inferior to that of the Huguenot Psalter itself. For nearly two hundred years, Lobwasser had almost unlimited sway in the German Reformed Church; and to this day, he is not quite out of date. He owed this success distinctly to the verbally exact adaptation of his version to the French melody. The work was recast musically in 1607 by Landgrave Maurice of Hesse, who sought to bring it into harmony with the declamatory style of singing at that time coming into fashion, and again by Samuel Marschall (Basel, 1606); by Cruger (Berlin, 1656); by Sultzberger (Bern, 1675). Lobwasser also published a collection of Hymni patrum und anderer gottseliger Manner, welche durchs ganze Jahr in den Kirchen gesungen werden, aus dem Latein ins Deutsch mit gleichen Reimen gebracht (Leipsic, 1578-79). Some of these translations found acceptance in the Lutheran Church.Ad 2: Rare songbook for the church with translations, adaptations and texts by Martin Luther and Johannes Habermann (1516-1590), published together with (1), by Hendrik Wetstein, with the Cathechismus at the end as called for on the title van (1): pp. 2-24: Psalm-Lieder (Ps. 1-3, 6, 12-15, 23, 25, 31, 37, etc.; pp. 24-45: Vom H. Junger, Sebastian. The Perfect Storm : A True Story of Men Against the Sea. New York, NY, U.S.A.: W. W. Norton & Company, Incorporated, 1997. ISBN: 039304016X

First edition Second Printing (234567890). 227 pages with acknowledgments. This book and jacket are in FINE condition, really AS NEW (unread) except for previous owner's label on inside cover page. This is a very tight pristine copy. This is the book that inspired the film with George Clooney.Dust jacket reads: It was the storm of the century, boasting waves over one hundred feet high-a tempest created by so rare a combination of factors that meteorologists deemed it "the perfect storm." When it struck in October 1991, there was virtually no warning. "She's comm' on, boys, and she's comm' on strong," radioed Captain Billy Tyne of the Andrea Gail off the coast of Nova Scotia, and soon afterward the boat and its crew of six disappeared without a trace. In a narrative taut with the fury of the elements, Sebastian Junger takes us deep into the heart of the storm, depicting with vivid detail the courage, terror, and awe that surface in such a gale. Junger illuminates a world of swordfishermen consumed by the dangerous but lucrative trade of offshore fishing-"a young man 5 game, a single man's game"-and gives us a glimpse of their lives in the tough fishing port of Gloucester, Massachusetts; he recreates the last moments of the Andrea Gail crew and recounts the daring high-seas rescues that made heroes of some and victims of others; and he weaves together the history of the fishing industry, the science of storms, and the candid accounts of the people whose lives the storm touched. The Perfect Storm is a real-life thriller that leaves us with the taste of salt air on our tongues and a breathless sense of what it feels like to be caught, helpless, in the grip of a force of nature beyond our understanding or control. We know on the strength of this stark and compelling journey into the dark heart of nature, what it feels like to drown. ---------------- Hard Cover condition: As New in Fine dj
