First edition. 3 volumes, folio, illustrated with 80 engraved plates, 70 hand-coloured, chapter initials coloured and heightened with gold, title pages foxed, occasional light spotting to text, plates clean, nineteenth century black half morocco, neat restoration to joints and extremities, a very good set. An even greater work [than The Costume of the Original Inhabitants of the British Isles], on the title-page of which Colonel Smith's name does not appear, but which is in reality hardly less indebted to him, is Sir Samuel Meyrick's Critical Inquiry ... the greater part of the coloured plates were copied from Colonel Hamilton Smith's drawings. (Martin Hardie). Hardie p.155.
