Hewitt, James: LOVE AND WAR, Blake, John Publishing, Limited 1999
ISBN: 1-85782-318-4 As New Condition
From the Publisher Almost two months following the second anniversary of her death, Princess Diana's former lover James Hewitt's explosive memoirs will be simultaneously released in Britain and the United States on Tuesday, October 26. This is the sensational biography that promises to reveal Diana's intimate thoughts about her past relationships and quotes from the contents of the love letters Diana sent to Hewitt while her marriage to Prince Charles was eroding. The worldwide press has been following this story ever since it was disclosed that Hewitt was Diana's lover. In February of this year, Hewitt won a legal battle giving him ownership of the personal letters sent to him by the Princess during his tour of duty in the Gulf War. In these letters, Diana wrote passionately to him -- almost every day -- pouring out her heart of the love and affection Hewitt brought to her life. Hewitt is expected to offer at least five major new revelations about Diana in the book, which she revealed to him as he supported her and cared for her through the most emotional time of her life. Efforts by both the Royal Family and the Spencer family to stop publication of the book were unsuccessful. James Hewitt will be promoting his book on major television news programs in the United States in late October. The dust jacket reads: Minute by Minute is the fabulous story of 60 Minutes, on screen and behind the scenes, as only Don Hewitt, its creator and executive producer, can tell it. ABC's Peter Jennings calls Hewitt a "better storyteller than most of the famous story tellers who have worked for him." And now, after thirty-seven years at CBS, he tells it all-from the early days when he directed Douglas Edwards with the News in "living black and white," through his years as director of the CBS Evening News with Walter Cronkite, to the day when, kicked upstairs by his boss to make documentaries ("snoozers," as he calls them). He was driven by sheer boredom to invent a new kind of television show, and 60 Minutes was born. In Minute by Minute, the most important and revealing book yet on TV and TV news, Hewitt brings it all to life. "Pick it up," says Dan Rather, "turn to any page and you'll love it. Nobody but Hewitt could have written it." With characteristic candor and pungency, Hewitt puts us on the other side of the TV screen as correspondence pursue the news and conduct the interviews that make up his personal hall of fame-memorable performances by the leading lights of stage and screen and sports and politics, by con men and gunmen and just plain folds. Here's how Harry and Dan, Ed and Diane, Mike and Morley made the show that told America "What Really Happened at the Gulf of Tonkin," exposed "The Other Face of the IRA<" and helped get an innocent man named Lenell Geter out of jail in Texas. Here's how a stellar cast and crew brought us the stars and the names in the news: Liz and Dick and LBJ, Woody Allen and the Shah of Iran, Betty Ford and Jesse Jackson, Katharine Hepburn, Sir Laurence Olivier, and half a hundred more.
