Weeden, Howard. BANDANNA BALLADS. Including "Shadows On The Wall". Verses And Pictures By Howard Weeden. Introduction by Joel Chandler Harris. New York: Doubleday & McClure Company, 1899
Pine green pebbled cloth-covered boards, gilt lettering on spine and front board, top edge of pages dyed green, deckle edge paper (hardcover binding). Illustrated with full page black & white plates by the author. CONDITION: Owner's name and address and date "Xmas '99" on flyleaf, else Near Fine, clean and bright, sound and tight. Nice copy. Negro dialect poetry and wonderful black & white reproductions of water-color paintings of "old-time plantation negroes" which are so well done that they almost look like photographs. In spite of the name, Howard Weeden (1847-1905) was a woman, a white woman from Huntsville, Alabama. Her parents, grandparents and great-grandparents had been slaveholders and large cotton-planters and her four books and paintings were based on her memories of the negroes who lived and worked on the plantation as slaves and servants. "I am moved to thank Heaven for the beautiful genius that has snatched from the past and preserved the handful of memories embodied in this book. For me, and for all who are in love with simplicity, there is a story behind each pathetic face here pictured..."- Joel Chandler Harris in his introduction. Bibliography of American Literature (BAL) 7144.. First edition. 8vo. xvi, 90 pages.

Harris, Joel Chandler: Uncle Remus and His Friends: Old Plantation Stories, Songs, and Ballads with Sketches of Negro Character. Illustrated By A. B. Frost, Boston Houghton, Mifflin and Company

357p. A very good copy, which has a slight bump at the bottom of the spine, the ends of the spine and the forecorners of the covers are very slightly rubbed, two places in the book (pp. 153-4 and pp. 315-6) have been slightly carelessly opened, and the spine is slightly faded. About the inscription: "Written for a little New Jersey girl: / With the best wishes of Joel chandler Harris. / New Year's, 1907." There is another inscription on the same front free endpaper which reads: "For my dear little / friend, Margaret Moir, / with love and best / wishes, from J. R. Nutting / Atlanta, Jan. 1907." Also laid-in is a letter from Mr. Nutting of J. C. Nutting & Co., State Managers to Mr. Henry Moir, Actuary, at the Provident Savings Life Assurance Society of New York, thanking him for his hospitality and telling him he was sending Margaret an author-inscribed copy of "Uncle Remus." The front cover of the book has nice bright gold lettering of the author and title and the black illustrations are sharp and clear. The lettering on the spine is less bright, but readable and the illustration of the fox and the turtle is clear enough. A presentable copy of an important book inscribed by the author to a child.
