Harriet Beecher Stowe, geborene Harriet Elizabeth Beecher (* 14. Juni 1811 in Litchfield, Connecticut; 1. Juli 1896 in Hartford, Connecticut) war eine US-amerikanische Schriftstellerin (Onkel Toms Hütte) und erklärte Gegnerin der Sklaverei. Schon in ihrem früheren Wohnsitz hatte sie sich mit der Sklavenfrage beschäftigt; noch eingehendere Studien und Beobachtungen machte sie, als sie mit ihrem Ehemann wiederholt den Süden bereiste und die Pflanzungen von Louisiana, Tennessee, Georgia und den Carolinas, die Sklavenzüchtereien von Virginia, die "Negermärkte" von New Orleans etc. sah. Die hier empfangenen Eindrücke legte sie in ihrem berühmten, künstlerisch weniger als sozial bedeutenden, die traurige Lage der versklavten Schwarzafrikaner in den nordamerikanischen Sklavenstaaten darstellenden Roman Uncle Tom's cabin (deutsch: Onkel Toms Hütte) nieder, der in der National Era (Juni 1851 bis April 1852) und 1852 als Buch in Boston erschien und seitdem in Amerika immer wieder aufgelegt und in zahlreiche Sprachen übersetzt wurde.
