But his "real" journey-a maze of internal perceptions with surrogates of himself and Judy at every turn-is an exploration of how we are sometimes animated by the identities of others. With reflections upon the present political and probable future relations of Texas, Mexico and the United States. The book recounts the abortive expedition in 1842 under William S. Fisher and Thomas J. Green into Mexico after the withdrawal of the Somervell Expedition. The small group of Texans raided and plundered the area, and attacked a large Mexican force in the town of Mier on December 25, 1842. Although the Texans inflicted heavy losses on the Mexicans, they were tricked into surrendering. Because President Sam Houston had ordered the Texans not to cross the Rio Grande, the captured Texasn were considered filibusters and the entire force was ordered to ber executed as outlaws. This was later partly rescinded, and one in ten were ordered to be shot by Santa Anna.
