Although Goya never held an official position in government, his services to the court and his friends of influence aroused in him a sense of political responsibility in the face of a society at first in violent transition and then in complete dissolution. Julia Blackburn relaciona en este libro el proceso de enfermedad y muerte de su madre (una pintora), con su propia investigacion acerca de los ultimos dias de la vida de Goya y sus viajes por Espana relacinados con esta investigacion. En cierto modo, reune tres libros en uno con diferentes grados de ficcionalizacion que interactuan entre si. Asi, al reconstruir los ultimos dias de Goya, y a tenor de lo que le va contando su madre, no duda en aventurar que debio sentir y pensar el pintor aragones. Por ello, ademas de una muy util reconstruccion de los ultimos dias de la vida de Goya, con atencion tambien al contexto politico y social (la guerra de la independencia), este ensayo acaba por convertirse en una interesante reflexion acerca de la decadencia y la muerte. En esta obra se detallan muchos datos poco conocidos acerca de la relacion entre Moratin y Goya, como la reproduccion de algunas de las cartas que cruzaron que constituye un interesante documento para los lectores de biografias o para los interesados en la hisotria del arte. La edicion tambien incluye una seleccion de los grabados de Goya cuidadosamente reproducidos en esta edicion.
