Foote, Peter und David M. Wilson: The Viking achievement. The society and culture of early medieval Scandinavia. Great civilizations series. London : Sidgwick & Jackson, 1970.
Aus dem Nachlass von Michael Richter. Einband leicht berieben. - The Norsemen abroad have often been described in English, but we mean to look chiefly at Scandinavian societies at home in the period A.D. 800 - 1200. In so doing we shall gain an inkling of the means whereby they maintained their commerce with the outside world, peaceful and warlike, on so large a scale and for so long a time. That commerce depended on many things, on the existence of stable societies fostering adaptable individuals, on ample and reliable food production, on the availability of essential raw materials, on widespread ability in the crafts necessary to provide the buildings, clothes, weapons, tools, ships, everything that made life and movement possible under Scandinavian conditions of terrain and climate - and all of these in such profusion that men by the thousand and ships by the score could be spared for ventures abroad. If an understanding of the age is to be gained, we must also speak of religion, family feeling, social organization, justice, decorative art, expressions of communal existence in literature, games and pastimes, and the chief moments of individual existence recognized by society at large - birth, coming of age, marriage, death. In these fields we may find the things that have unique value in early Scandinavian civilization, and here we may also discover the roots of the tolerance, mutual respect and pragmatic will to co-operate which distinguish the Scandinavian nations of today. -
