Ruiz, H. - Pavon, J. Florae peruviane et chilensis prodromus, sive novorum generum plantarum peruvianarum et chilensiu descriptiones et icones.
Grand folio XXII + 154 + XXXVII pp ills Vellum Good copy "One of the most important Spanish scientific expeditions of the 18th century A monumental work on the plants of Peru and Chile - a great imprint by Sancha". Folio; original vellum; 37 engraved plates separate from the text. FIRST EDITION OF THIS MAGNIFICENT BOOK PRINTED BY SANCHA.The 18th century, also called the Century of Enlightenment, was characterized by the flowering of sciences, among which botany was notable. In Spain this interest would crystallize in the organization of a series of scientific expeditions in the second half of the century to study the possible uses of American natural resources. With the coming of Carlos III to the Spanish throne these expeditions multiplied. In 1777 a botanical expedition was organized to the territories of the viceroyalty of Peru that comprised the present nations of Chile and Peru, under the leadership of Hipolito Ruiz Lopez (Belorado, Burgos 1752-Madrid 1816) who, without finishing his pharmacy studies, was named director of the expedition. Along with him, as second botanist, would go the French physician Joseph Dombey. Also, Jose Antonio Pavon y Jimenez (Casatejada, Caceres 1754-Madrid 1840) who was a pharmacist, was named botanist for the expedition to Peru and Chile, working closely with Hipolito Ruiz. The botanical illustrators Joseph Bonete and Isidro Galvez completed the expedition. The expedition left Cadiz in 1777 and arrived at Lima in April, 1778. During a period of almost eleven years they covered Peru and Chile, collecting specimens. They collected some 3,000 plant species, made some 2,500 natural sized botanical drawings, and made numerous shipments of seeds and living plants to the Royal Botanical Garden in Madrid. This expedition is considered to be one of the most important of the 18th century from a scientific point of view. The collections arrived in order in Cadiz in 1788 and were deposited in Madrid in the Botanical Office of the Flora of Peru. This establishment, a part of the Secretaria de Gracia y Justicia de Indias, was created ex-profeso in 1792 for the publication of Flora Peruviana y Chilense. Ruiz, in collaboration with Pavon, set about the preparation of the great work designed to show in detail the discoveries of the expedition: in 1794 the Prodomus work of the Flora del Peru y Chile, that we offer here, and between 1798 and 1802 the first three volumes of Flora Peruviana et Chilensis appeared. Two more volumes of this latter work were not published, principally due to the economic difficulties as a result of the post-Napoleonic Wars. The publication brought the incorporation of a hundred and fifty new genera and some five hundred new species that still carry the names given by Ruiz and Pavon.
