'Sid' Fleischman wrote some classic Gold Medal paperback original hardboiled novels including 'Blood Alley' which became a 1955 film directed by William Wellman, starring John Wayne and Lauren Bacall, and for which he wrote the screenplay. In 1962 he published his first children's book which lead to the famous McBroom series and the Newbery Award-winning 'The Whipping Boy'. "McBroom gets ready to tell his many preposterous stories in the World Champion Liar's contest only to be disqualified for telling the truth." - card catalog. " Never, nohow, and notwithstanding. And that was that. Josh McBroom refused to enter the World Champion Liar's Contest at the county fair. Especially after he'd been accused of trying to palm off the truth in the qualifying rounds. But then McBroom's eleven children discover a gigantic footprint outside the kitchen window - a footprint so large a hog could wallow in the big toe alone. That big, flat, bony-footed footprint could only belong to a giant! At least this is what the McBroom kids believe when they plant the bean seed to lure the giant down from the clouds. What happens as that beanstalk grows in their splendiferous topsoil - shooting up quicker than chain lightning - leads all the McBrooms into a fast-moving series of events which, to the reader's delight, turn the county fair and World Champion Liar's Contest topsy-turvy. Sid Fleischman, a master of the American tall tale, has written a new McBroom adventure even more ingenious than the last, 'McBroom Tells a Lie'. It rocks with laughter and outrageous good fun, which Walter Lorraine captures perfectly in his spirited illustrations." - front dust jacket flap. Fleischman, Sid [with Illustrations By Peter Sis]: The Whipping Boy, New York Greenwillow Books 1986
ISBN: 0-688-06216-4 Fine in Fine Dust Jacket Dust Jacket Art and Interior Illustrations By Peter Sis

Seventeenth Printing. vi, 90pp. Gray quarter-cloth, gray/blue paper boards, silver gilt spine lettering, blue/gray endpapers. Dust jacket unpriced. Signed and inscribed by Author to title page. Book and dust jacket are in fine, unread condition. No remainder markings. During the 1950s A.S. " A shout comes echoing up the stairway "Fetch the whipping boy!" A young orphan named Jemmy rouses from his sleep. "Ain't I already been whipped twice today? Gaw! What's the prince done now? It was forbidden to spank, thrash, or whack the heir to the throne. Jemmy had been plucked from the streets to serve as whipping boy to the arrogant and spiteful Prince Brat. Dreaming of running away, Jemmy finds himself trapped in Prince Brat's own dream - at once brash and perilous. In this briskly told tale of high adventure, taut with suspense and rich with colorful characters, the whipping boy and Prince Brat must at last confront each other. Award-winning author Sid Fleischman again blends the broadly comic with the deeply compassionate in this memorable novel." - front dust jacket flap. "With his flair for persuading readers to believe in the ridiculous, Fleischman scores a hit with his new creation. Sis's skillful pictures emphasize events in the adventures of the orphan Jemmy, kept in his king's palace to be thrashed for the offenses committed by the royal heir, known as Prince Brat. It is forbidden to punish Brat, whose tricks multiply until Jemmy is tempted to escape the daily round of flogging. But the prince himself takes off and forces the whipping boy to go with him. As they get into and out of trouble on the outside, Jemmy hears that he has been accused of abducting Brat. When the prince arranges for their return to the palace, poor Jemmy fears the worst, but things turn out for the best at the story's satisfying close. Colorful types like a thief called Hold-Your-Nose Billy, Betsy and her dancing bear Petunia, et al., increase the fun." - Publishers Weekly.
